WCR pups on the way!

Merry Christmas to me! I ordered a set of Fillmores and Goodwoods. Fillmores for my'71 LP Custom (currently stock neck and SD '59 bridge) and the woods for the JB Oxblood (Worstbuckers). Orderd some Hovlands from Tube Depot as well.

I can't decide on another set of HighOrders for my sunburst Les Paul, or a set of WCR's.....love both my HighOrder sets but it would take about three months to get them......on the flip side I really don't have the money for WCR's!!!

Then there's the Lollar Imperials staring at me too........

Always interested in that JB LP Chief...
What was your intentions for sound on that thing? What are you tryin' to get out of 'er ? I viewed it like a cross between a Custom and a Standard.
I thought mine sounded really go but we both have a different chemistry of gear so we all would like to hear your review on her.
Please tell us what you'll be playin' tru when you do...

Hey, JimiJames. I go back and forth with the Oxblood. Sometimes it sounds great and others flat. I'm not chasing a particular tone, just good tone and I like what everybody says about the WCR's. I'm not gigging regulary so I don''t have a main go to rig but I have the Metro 120000 and JTM45 and an 18 watt.

I'll keep you posted on what I hear!

Chief,what do you dislike about the Burstbuckers?A lot of people seem to like them,and an equal amount can't stand them.
I hear they aren't as mellow as some would like,but the scatterwind was supposed to be closer to a PAF than the '57 Classics which preceeded the Buckers.The JB is,I imagine not having played it,like a Junior with a maple top on it,acoustically loud that is.I picture it louder in that respect than say a comparable '54 Goldtop,with the same bridge arangement?
My '54 Junior was so freaking loud,how loud was it Dave?Some would think it was an acoustic guitar!I picture that mahogany/wraparound volume,with the refinement of the maple top.Dosen't the JB demand a medium to higher output pickup?I know of quite a few Oxblood owners,who have changed the pickups,though.
Chief,I looked up the Goodwoods,a cross betwwen the Fillmore's and the Darkburst,excellent choice,as Wayne would say!

Man... I don't know I did my soundclick file with those pickups ( BB2&3) with the JB sounded good I thought, recorded.
Live is a little diff. I wonder looking at the chart what pickups that Gibson makes are close to the coveted P.A.F.'s..... Weren't they hovering at around hi 7's & mid 8's?

Time will tell after the magnets mellow out on these Burst Buckers.

After talking to Jim via e-mail I'll be placing a future order for my '57 Blackbird. I have BB1&2's in there and I feel they're missing something.
An observation that the BB's are interchangable in the neck & bridge might make a difference to what would sound more appealing to the ear/listener.
I'll post a clip soon and let you'z guyz hear 'em...

Alot of people think single P-90 pickup '50s Juniors are *the* guitar to judge all others by.

The '57 Classics will be a bit "smoother" sounding than the BurstBuckers as they have better matched coils and are wound a bit differently. Both have Alnico II bar magnets. IMO Gibson is making very fine humbucking pickups. Like anything tone related, it's all subjective.

The JB is going to be a bit hotter, more middy and tighter bass than a PAF at the expense of a bit off the high end (not a bad thing through a Marshall). I run a JB in the bridge with a PAF in the neck in one guitar and it's a great rock 'n roll combo.

Yeah, Dave. The Oxblood is loud. I would something like a chambered LP might sound like unplugged. It is a live guitar.

I don't know how to put my finger on what I don't like about the BB's. I can only describe it as flat, like a can of coke left open overnight. Yet as JimiJ showed it can sound good as well. Maybe they're more picky pick ups than others???

Anyway, I think the Goodwoods are going to be a great upgrade even if the BB's were OK. I have a SD JB/JM laying around that ws going to go into the Oxblood. May try that at some time as well. The JB is a a pretty hot wind I was surprised to see when I looked it up on the SD site. And this is modeled after the ones SD put in the TeleGib.

NY Chief...I've had all four versions of the BB's I, II, III and the V.

I bought the aftermarket/sold separately BB's (I, II, III) four years ago. They came un-potted, nothing in there. The V's came potted.

My experiences:

BBI, 7.6k, sounds great, but it did need to have it's magnet waxed to kill some high volume squeal. It's now in my Wolfgang Special I had modded, and it sounds fine.

BB II, 8.05K, not enough output to match the I in the neck. Sold it.

BB III, 8.7k, a little shrill sounding in the bridge, but I had the magnet waxed, and that gave it more bass, and mids, and tamed the highs somewhat so that worked out. Kirk Fletcher of the Fabulous T-Birds heard it and told me I had do sell it to him. So I did.

BB V...possibly the deadest sounding pickups I'd heard from Gibson. These were potted, production models. My other BB's weren't production models, and I understand that after Gibson heard the squealing on the un-potted BB's they started making them all potted.

The V's were just a complete disappointment. Bassy, no zing, treble was muted, mids were strong, but kinda lifeless. I sold them off as fast as I could. The new owner loved them. Go figure.

To summarize, they are quite different sounding...you can get good BB's and bad ones. I had two good ones out of five. That's probably about the same ratio I've had for real PAF's. I've bought 11, kept 3.

Amazing so there are bad sounding PAF's then...?Its just the mythic surrounding the pickup anyone of them was to be a key to the holy grail!
I like my SD JB's just fine,the Gary Moore Gibson sig model 2000-2,has BB II and III's,I haven't played one,but most keep the originals I have noticed.Every guitar is different,I love the sound of my OBL's in my Hamer neck thru Superstrat,single,single,hum.They have a powerful yet clean output,and are body mounted.
It comes down to what you like,I would like to get my amps at a tonal reference point before I started messing with pickup changes.

WCR pickups are killer! I have Fillmores in my Les Paul Standard Plus. My McNaught G-5 has Goodwoods.

Yes Jimi body mounted my Steve Stevens Washburn is like this too,just like the EB/MM EVH and the Charvels of course,this Hamer I have is so rare,it has a custom diamonback rattlesnake paint job,explorer headstock,black hardware,ebony fingerboard,set neck,OFR tremelo,the big check mark inlays,it is so much a better playing sounding guitar than a Jackson Soloist,ect.
When I can afford to get a digital camera,I will shoot some amazing close up details of my guitars and stuff foryou guys,all my previous pictures are from a disposable camera transfered to cd,lol

The Hamer and Washburn rule and they absolutely rule over that EVH Charvel,I hope the new Warren DeMartini Dinky is better.
