Las Pauls & 1Meg Pots ?

Hey there,

I was checking a website for a vendor in LA and they were saying that installing 1 meg volume pots can greatly improve the "openness" of the guitar.

Does anyone have experience with this ?

i've seen some talk about different values altering the "tone". i always thought using the smallest value possible to oppose the pickup would give you the best taper? i use 250k's when i can.

well 250k in the volume position is darker then 500k pot which is brighter and hotter. 1 meg for a volume? think tele baby.

The thinking is, the bigger the pot the more resistance to ground when the pot is wide open, so less signal leaks away -- which is most apparent in the highs.

Problem with going from a 500K to 1M is there is a huge sweep of the pot that has really no effect, and it is more sensitive to small changes as there is more resistance (~2x) per linear distance.

I just put a 1 meg on my Gibson 500T last weekend. Factory was a 300k. Using it with a Tonestyler and I can roll off the highs with that. I like it. Not sure I would always do it, but for now its cool.
