humbucker help

Post by monsterwalley » Wed Nov 01, 2006 9:24 pm

Just wonderin if anybody has a suggestion on replacement pickups for my gibson sg standard. Currently has 498T in bridge and 490R in neck.
The neck is muddy as hell, but I don't play there anyway. I think I've heard that the plexi's don't like real hot pickups? I'd like to get the Angus tone and have heard that the "angus" pickup doesnt really do that either.
An earlier post made mention of having a "highOrder" pickup made Any more opinions on that?

You would probably want to go to an Alnico V magnet neck pickup, or swap out the Alnico II magnet for an Alnico V.

the 498T in bridge and 490R are some of the worst pickups ever made.
throw a seymore duncan JB in the bridge and a seymour duncan jazz in the neck and listen to the difference. ;)
if you want to spend some money on pickups check out Jim Wagner's. a set of darkbursts or even his crossroads. nice man, nice.

Agreed , those pick-up's are among the worst I have heard. No warmth, soul or character to speak of.I think they are ceramic magnet type, so any you get (alnico 2 or 5, baring active) will sound better.

Dimarzio Super 2 is the best neck pickup I have ever heard in a guitar. They get the body of a neck pickup while still retaining a bit of cut so it wont get muddy.

F.Y.I. The 490 and 498's are not ceramic. They are alnico V's. Personally I love them. I took out the weak t-tops, the Tim Shaws, the circuit board Gibson/Bill Lawrance that came stock with most of my Les Pauls and replaced them with the 490/498 series. Although I'm really diggin' the DiMarzio Air Norton in the bridge, even tho most like to use it in the neck. BTW, I am not a fan of Dimarzio, but the Air Nortons impressed me. Hey, to each his own!

According to the Gibson website, the 490R is Alnico II and the 498T is Alnico V.

yeah, my lp classic has the stock pu's i don't hate them. each one of my guitars sounds quite different, & i don't mind that either. i certainly have heard pickups that i despised, but generally i would chalk it up to my own personal tastes. i'd love to try some of the "boutiques", but i dont want to drop a couple of hundred for some specs on paper & hope i get lucky. honestly, i think lots of guys got nice sounds from the crappy stock guitars they used back in the old days. again, a matter of opinion.

Where do the Burst Buckers fit in as compared to the 498T and 490R? According to the Gibson website I have a Burstbucker 2R and a 3T in my '54 Oxblood RI. I'm not sure about them. Sometimes they sound OK and other times they strike me as crap. I'm not sure if it's the pickups or something else.

Anybody have a good breakdown on the Gibby stock p/u's?? Being it's bascially a clone of Beck's LP I guess I should just dump a Duncan JB and JM in the thing, huh?

Oh I was mistaken, I guess I confused the number's with the 490 and 500 t, which is what is in my V. Good sounding guitar, not so good sounding pick-up's.
