Actually the second cut is a H30 not a V30 two entirely different speakers that said I still think the 25 M sounded much more like the original song. The second cut is missing all the mids of the greenback and the original song has plenty of mids. And that is what I thought he was asking.

i listened to the clips in headphones - because that's the way i listen to stuff while i'm at "work" --- and in the headphones, the first clip made me feel like i wanted to back away from the sound so the highs would stop getting in the way of the tone - i certainly don't feel that way when i hear van halen I.

the second clip was so much more listenable and smooth - more like ed in that way.

I thought the second was a G12H30.

ooops. Nevermind. I guess it was.

The last sentence says it best. The voicing of the first clip is closest to VH.
Cheers to the ears.

...with the exception of the spiky, brittle, obtrusive, glassy, un-vh-like high end.

is that where eds 50 foot cable comes in handy?

I think that ge-10 is making a huge differance, especially when you hit the A and the G chords

listened again this morning - i see what you mean about cut 1 being the correct voice although i don't have vh I here to A-B it - maybe it's the low volume thing making the super-highs too predominant - when i listen to cut 2 today i really here a non-vh sounding thing happening when he hits the C note on the A string - there is a plainness to it because the lows are eating up the color of the mids. too bad for moi that there isn't a V30 example here to compare it to. :(

thanks to adamsapple for posting a very helpful clip.

re:
33uf and 47uf in series on the screens

when you put them in series you divide them in half if they are the same value - so, i'm guessing you end up with somewhere around 20uf with that. what do you have? a 33+33 can and 47+47 can?

did you do that on purpose?

re:
50 jumpered on V3

is that a 50+50 in parallel? rendering 100uf?

re:
430 volts

that's nice and low ay? for brownness and goodness?

sorry for 20 questions. i am on a quest.
are these the droids i am looking for?

thanks,
-rob

I prefer clip #1 slightly over #2...and #3, the Eminence...doesn't even sound like a Private Jack. The high/high mids were different than what I am used to hearing from the PJ .

I hear you guys on the biting high end on the recordings. Like I said I recorded this stuff w/o thinking. It wasnt even at band level and the mike was straight into the dust cap/ no angle. Also, all these speakers are brand new/ not broken in. I will attempt to re-record cranked, angled mike etc. for a better representation. The GE-10 eq does it for EVH, it cuts low end boominess, adds midrange crunch and drive and smooths the high end. I dont know how Rockstah was able to get the gain he did w/o a boost pedal on his '67 recordings. Rockstah's amp nails VHII IMO! Rock on!!
