You have got to ditch that cap, ream it out and put a modern one inside if you want but that cap is an accident waiting to happen!Xplorer wrote:okay, some more liquid coming out of the 0,056uf 1000v red cap

Re: JTM 45/100 - Build story
Thanks guys, it's nice to have you onboard, i appreciate !
Yes, it requires some persistence, that's true
So Neil, you're suggesting to put this cap to the trash ? i'm not familiar with some slang sometimes.
Here it is, 5w resistors changed for some RS ones. and you can see the black wires on the pots, for the ground points connected to the preamp later.
Then, i'll try to :
- find a way to check every pins connectivity on each tube sockets.
- check the wiring again
- check the power board under action, without preamp board installed, if it's possible ?
- check the pots
- install the new preamp board
- reform the caps
- test it !

Yes, he means that you must swap that cap for a good one. It's not safe to use it.

Re: JTM 45/100 - Build story
Guys ! it's working now !!!!
with stock values, and the old 16uf back in ( i accidentaly broke one lead of the old RS 32uf unfortunately ) .
and it does saturate as it should !!!!
yes, a bit harsh but i played on it only 5 minutes.
i'll send clips for confirmation later
Coooool
Thanks a ton to all of you for such great story
ps : i still don't know what's fucked up on the older preamp. a volt meter and cap meter seem to be not enough to test components, so .... is it just about luck ? how could i measure stuffs deeper ?

Re: JTM 45/100 - Build story
Many thanks !
i had a lot of fun playing it ( but tonight, through some headphones because of neighbours ) , and it seriously kicks ass !!!!!!! it rocks !!! Nothing related to the previous tone. and i felt that it improved over the hour of playing. Even with a strat it breaks up really great, doing some acdc easyly with it.
I can't wait to test it on a 4x12 unattenuated ^^
pfiouuu, what a work ! Now i can build a second one the eyes closed
but i'll build another one with diufferent specs, and another superlead 69 probably, a sound city 105/cp103...
i'm really glad it sounds so good.

Re: JTM 45/100 - Build story
Congrats Adrien - happy it worked out finally after all the effort and love that went into this. you walked along road to get there...
What about ghosting? I still get a bit on mine when i play it wide open with a les paul on the neck pickup (so it happens under a very particular scenario and doesn't bother me - after some break-in the ghosting decreased quite a bit).
Now i'm really looking forward to some clips!

Re: JTM 45/100 - Build story

Thanks ! well i didn't notice an unusual ghosting. off course on some pickup selections, there's some noise, just as usual.
john suhr invented a special backplate to work on the pickups, and remove the noise. i sold mine when i couldn't really test it. i should perhaps buy one again.
yes, clips when it'll get broken in a bit.
now, i've got to repair my echoplexs , build another germanium fuzz, hunt the noises in my setup, tune my vintage early electric mistress, build my special univibe, and dozains of things ^^

Re: JTM 45/100 - Build story
yeah ! i love playing it.
i think that the way it is, i'll can hear the difference if i swap preamp tubes, if i do some little mods ...
but before that, it didn't have the right base to do it.
here it is a 0,02uf 1500v , meaured about 0,035uf, to replace the damaged 0,056uf. i suppose it's ok, for this value ?
And ... the amp the way it is today, working.
i'll update a little bit the layout, so it can be used, knowing it's working for me at least.
