Anyone hear Early Ed in this?

Post by Funky Hunky » Wed Nov 14, 2012 11:36 am

Particularly the bright edge and attack from the Alder and Ceramic pickup combo. Not sayin' all Ed's tones were this way. The more ballsy early stuff. One of these through a nice Plexi= Quick way to get there.

I'm not hearing any VH in there, early or otherwise...just my two cents.

It is Alder. He has a model that is Padauk but this is not it. The USA Bill Lawrence L500XL is ceramic and was also when Bill Owned the company originally. Bill and his wife are using A5 in the ones they now make. The USA Bill Lawrences are still ceramic. Give a listen to Hot for Teacher then this. The player is different for sure but I hear the same high end chirp, attack and grind.

Hot for teacher was recorded with an original flying V with stock PAF pickups form the late 50's, I think - probably A2 mags...
Garbeaj is the expert when it comes to HFT and V's and stuff....

I've tried both USA 500 and B&B (in a gibson V and alder strat) and could not hear VH-like sounds - Nuno's tone very easy (not his playing though :hide: )

Stef is very kind when describing my knowledge of "Hot For Teacher", but here's what I have gathered:

No whammy at all on "Hot For Teacher"...the entire song was recorded with Ed's original '58 Gibson Flying V with what I believe to be unmolested P.A.F.'s. (solo tone is the same as the rest of the track as far as I can tell, except when he switches to the bass pickup for the quiet "LaGrange" parts)...

"Girl Gone Bad" was also recorded entirely with the Flying V. Everything except the leads on "Drop Dead Legs" was the V as well...Everything exept the leads on "5150" (the title song from the 5150 album) was the Flying V and also "Top of the World".

It really is amazing how much great Van Halen music was recorded with fixed bridge guitars when you add up all the Destroyer tracks on Van Halen and Women and Children First, the Gibson 335 on the solo of "And the Cradle Will Rock", "Top Jimmy" with the Tele-like Ripley stereo guitar...even tracks like the solo on "When It's Love" and some of the rhythm guitar overdubs on "Best of Both Worlds" which were recorded on a vintage strat show him choosing to avoid using the whammy in any way.

Great info! Where did you find this stuff? What amazes me is the range of tones he got too. Years ago a guy told me Ed claimed to have used a Dean V also. Dunno?

I have to say these things are fairly common knowledge...

Ed did use a black Dean V in a live shot from the '78 tour...there was also his red Dean V that you see in the Women and Children First "pick-axe" photo session with Neil Zlozower.

I also forgot the "parts"-caster with the Danelectro neck that he used for the intro to "Women In Love"...I learned about that one (and a lot of other guitar related info) from jimi22182. He is up there with Scott Smith and very few others when it comes to arcane Van Halen guitar knowledge...
