Re: Pictures from Whiskey Gig pre VH1
I know Hammered. I was just being very sarcastic. The timeline of Ed painting Frank seems to be pretty spot on due to exhaustive research by a lot of people here and at other boards. All of which is retrievable at this forum!hammered wrote:I was laughing at something else as I have no problems with the rumors of which guitar he used on VH1. I can try to post a boot from June of 77 at the whiskey to see how Ed sounds there vs the 12/31/77 gig , give me a few hrs
But thus, if you play a black/white Frank BEFORE VH1 comes out, that means you played a black/white Frank ON VH1 sessions. At least ways that's what someone is hanging onto here.
New members, which we always need, should take the time to dig through a lot of the old threads here - the exhaustive research, debate, and conclusions on much of Ed's gear and tone chase is jaw dropping. That's why I lurked for about 6 months. Wasn't gonna open my mouth when people were miles ahead of me in figuring out what Ed had been up to early on.

I actually DOUBT that there is a 'new' member here. Sounds like a different alias to me
.
Anyways, from those photo's (I think they were from the 12/31/77 gig) you cant really see the pu.
I think the MAIN thing established here is that Ed obviously painted the Franky before the Destroyer, which is what had already been eluded to.
You gotta use your ears. Eddie was OBVIOUSLY using a hot ceramic pu for the ENTIRE year of '77 (In his strat/s that is).
The 'refined' sound of the '78 tour, though still BAD ASSED, was obviously a comprimise, resulting in a trade off of gain and sizzle (MM/DSD) for warmth and fidelity (9kish A2 paf).
I think Vh2 has the same sound as the '78 tour (tracks like 'Your No Good', 'DTNA' , 'SGMAD' , 'Beautiful Girls' sound like the '78 tour stuff to me).
Ed dumped the MM/DSD tone for a high 8 to low 9kish alnico 2 type. I'm not sure if Ed's was a unmolested paf or not, but a 9k A2 pu has 'something' to it regarding the '78 tour/VH2 tone imo. VH1 tone ='s straight DSD tone in the Franky.
VANHALEN5150, that pic is a trip man,

In one of those videos the band released with Ed, Al, and Dave chatting, Al mentions playing sax. Alas, confirmation .monkface wrote:Here's another early shot.

The first one is at the Pasadena Civic. Dave mentions it during ITO. Not that that makes any difference.hammered wrote:Hopefully you guys can DL these , not the greatest sound but very listenable

Well that confuses the heck out of me LOL , since the only boot I've heard from the Pasadena civic is oct. 77 and that is a pretty killer soundboard bootrgorke wrote:The first one is at the Pasadena Civic. Great pics. But I will continue to use my ears period. This does not prove a PAF in any way. I hear otherwise.

I guess it comes down to...what sounds good to you and works well with your gear.

if youre referring to nitro/halen, trust me he's gone. I'd recognize nitro's demeanor, terrible grammar and mechanics anywhere. plus he has been permanently banned so unless he creates a new email and uses a totally different machine on a different IP address he cant return.Tone Slinger wrote:I actually DOUBT that there is a 'new' member here. true enough, until we establish the metro time machine fundrgorke wrote:I guess it comes down to...what sounds good to you and works well with your gear.

A very sensible answer.rgorke wrote:I guess it comes down to...what sounds good to you and works well with your gear.

No one knows what was in his guitar at any giving time and no one ever will but i am not retracting the fact that he played the black and white guitar prior to the recording of the first record. you can even hear it is a all maple neck on the strat tracks.
the first record tone is a bit too aggressive/sharp/tight/focused to be a rosewood neck and standard PAF or even a slightly overwound one.
so my vote for what is in that Black and white strat pre VH's first record is the duncan sh5.
makes sense to me considering many of you here have said you seen him using a mighty mite super distortion clone before
the sh5 is nothing more than a refined version of those.

Re: Pictures from Whiskey Gig pre VH1
I have to agree with the possibilty of the sh5 after hearing the clips of that pickup posted here-it is ballsy like a dsd indeed but as stated "refinined". So thats definitly on the table in my opinion.
I mean the dsd pole pieces are dead giveaways period. So if there ever is a pic that surfaces of him using either regular poles or hex poles in a time frame that can be confirmed ....... then we can really lay it to rest more in a certain direction.
So pics around this time frame are very important in the investigation. Somewhere someplace there is a pic not yet seen.
We know how we can muster that mysterious gain after looking at a dsd and looking at Eds amp specs and pete thorns demo.
It wasn't a PAF, it simply leads in one direction and thats a hotter pickup. Which hotter pickup is the new question I am chasin. And its not that I would find it works great for me. I like mv amps and hate dealing with load boxes. Most of the preamp gained amps I like aren't gonna work well with a bodacious driven pickup. But would like to know which pickups knocks a dead horse into a fire breather
I said it before meager pickups for hi gain amps and vice versa... hi output pickups into nutless amps. I know Eds spec here is NOT gonna produce the gain of a SLO or my channel 3 EVH 5153- it needs some definite drive in front to even think of getting there and PAF is not gonna cut it. Not for VH1 without a eq or other boost in between.
