I see you didn't twist your OT secondaries, I often wondered if that was ever an issue to begin with?

I've been seeing allot of builds that don't bother twisting them, but I did bundle them up pretty tight with shrink tubing so we shall see. I was able to keep the primaries far away from the secondaries on the OT.vanhalen5150 wrote:I see you didn't twist your OT secondaries, I often wondered if that was ever an issue to begin with?
Regarding the PT, because of how they are situated on the other side of the tranny, the heater wires have got me concerned because I had to bundled them with everything ells, will that cause a problem?

That's a good question because you could get 2 types of current running fairly close together there at some point. Maybe not. Are not these trannys usually stand ups by design? I think ours are kinda special requests made as laydowns? Maybe they didn't think of that? I have a 50 watt PT that has one heater wire on each side.

Everything bundled there is secondary AC. You won't get any DC until your up on the board diodes so I think that's still ok.

So here is that variac....destroyed. Thank you UPS for another fine delivery job. Front plug in totally destroyed, aluminum faceplate bend beyond belief, wires pulled from fuse holder. Still get a reading on the coil, but it seems to vary a lot as you go up.

Wow, that thing is f%$#@ up! Did the center shaft bend, hopefully not. Those things need to be double boxed with tons of bubble wrap. Last year I bought one and the guy just put it in a box without any bubble wrap, it arrived pretty much a piece of crumpled garbage. The face plate might be ok, I'll take a look and send it to you if you like with a new three pronged plug. The cab looks great, does it have the flat lip?

Yeah, has the flat bottom. I noticed it has the large black rubber feet like my Variplex. The variplex has the rounded bottom, and doesnt look bad at all. They are charging $20 for the flat bottom now too.
No shielding in them? Kinda sucks. I have a cool idea for a headbox myself soon.
Here is how it fell out of the box. You'll notice the wall plug is on the right side. It should be on the left. Somebody reversed the internals and bolted them to the front aluminum face, which is why it bent everything during transit. The coil mounts were now in the back with nothing bolted to them. That coils is about 10lbs.
Not the sellers fault, she didnt know. I sent her these photo's, and she's giving me my money back and told me to keep the unit. I'll fix it.

See the coil mount bolted to the face? That is not how they were made. The mount lugs are in the back because they reversed it. WTF? Once I got it apart, the center shaft turned ok, and I do get readings on the meter. I may be able to flatten the face plate, but I need a new 3 way switch, plug and fuse holder to get it back in shape. May even put on a new plug. It's pretty old.
I could always turn it into a secret distortion box and not tell anyone whats in it......

Well, in a way, the fact that most of the impact was absorbed by that bending face plate you came away with the coil in pretty good shape. If the coil had been attached to the back, it would have been toast after a fall like that. I've got a face plate with fuse, three prong plug and switch that you can have. Let me take a pic first.

That would be swell...I'll probably put a new cord with a 3 prong as well. Here is the coil bolted to the faceplate.

Thats what I think, I think it says Statco on it? I think someone replaced it and had to put it in backwards. Gotta love ebay...

It should look something like this. The 140 was wired on the switch, so maybe it was a 140 replacement coil.

Yep, that's the ohmite right there.
