Pickup Shootout-59, EVH Frank, DSD, CC.
Ok gentlemen here we go with a nice little pickup shootout. This was a fun learning experience for me..While listening back, I could definitely hear the differences in each pickup. I hope this sheds some light on different magnets and their character. We have an A5(59), A2 degaussed(EVH), Ceramic(DSD)and regular A2(CC). Guitars were all strat style guitars with maple necks and floyds. One of the guitars was a basswood body and the rest were Alder. The Custom Custom (CC) was in the basswood guitar. There are 5 different clips with each pickup. What are your impressions?
Update: I realized in the original clip that I posted that I had forgotten to pan the reverb correctly on the Super Distortion portion of the clip. It has been fixed. My apologies for any confusion.

impressions...? Impressive !
Kickass shootout ! You make them all sound good!
This Demo, the DSD & DCC are doin' it for me. Although the DSD sounded hottest, was giving me more of the VH1.
non related, I really like the woodiness of that EVH. Nice pickup.

EXCELLENT post Thorny........THANKS for that man!! For me personally, I heard good things in the 59 and the Dimarzio DSD....those were the winners for me.

DSD sounds best to my ears, close second: EVH Frankenstrat pickup

Thorny this is a great clip to demo those pups on different VH1 tracks, played both strat and destroyer tracks wth those!

I listened many times and clearly the dsd has the most balls followed by the EVH. My EVH frank sounds great with a ceramic magnet in it though
GREAT PLAYIN btw!

Amazing stuff, thanks for taking the effort!
To my ear the Dimarzio was the closest to how I hear Ed's sound on VH1. The SCC sounded close to me as well. I loved the openness of the 59, but in comparison to the compression and balance of the DSD it wasn't the winner for the VH1.
btw, the sound of your amp and your playing was excellent.

Thorny which did you like best since you are actually playing them all?

Re: Pickup Shootout-59, EVH Frank, DSD, CC.
I should note that the DSD is super close to the strings! Man that pickup is really mid scooped compared to the others. Anyone notice that? It actually makes the reverb sound different. I have always said the difference between the first 2 albums was that the reverb sounded different and the guitar sounded farther away on the first album, with the second album sounding warmer and slightly less processed. The DSD definitely allows more of the reverb to come through and it sounds a little distant. I do feel that the CC and the EVH cut though the mix better due to the strong mids they have. The 59 has the most single coil character to it. The thickness is there but you can still hear that quality on certain chords.Marshall SL12301 wrote:Thorny which did you like best since you are actually playing them all?

pete thorn said that on his SUHR sl 68 clip when he demo'ed the DSD in his strat.Thorny wrote: Man that pickup is really mid scooped compared to the others..
seems like the DSD is still the no. 1 for the 1st record tone since you dont have a SH5 to compare?

Thank you very much for this shootout, Thorny! It really opened my eyes, or ears! Yes, indeed, the DSD was the closest to the VH 1. I think it was dramatically different from the others. It would have been nice to hear Ibanez Super 70 among these pickups!

Did anyone else notice how Great the DSD sounded on ATBL intro? Just that section alone tells me the DSD or MM was used for VH1

Killer shootout!!! DSD has the early Halen hands down. I love the EVH though for all purpose. Chops man, you got 'em!
