I'm thinking of getting an old RG80 to relive my 80s gear. They're dirt cheap, solid state, and sound kind of like a JCM800.

Go ahead, flame me.

Well, I just got one for $150 shipped!

... and it has tolex. I do have some taste ... and carpet is not an acceptable cover material. :P

I hope it doesn't sound like crap!

Well, it wasn't really the AGE that was in question.....I mean, Fender Zodiac solid-state amps are vintage too, but I'd check the skull of anyone who wanted one......

Ah c'mon ... even the old Randall ads say that their amps sound just as good as tubes, but without the "hassle".

Ah well, my old Music Man head doesn't get a real warm response from the masses either.

Those MM heads amps are workhorses. I know guys that have been playing them since they were new in the mid 70's.

Gnu, we will be expecting clips, of course.

It's about to be a workhorse again, it's the only amp I've got that will stay clean enough for the bass gig I'm gonna do (even at only 75 watts, it's surprisingly loud and clean!!) Ordered a 1x15 from Avatar for it, it'll still rearrange your intestines with some bottom.
It's also (surprisingly again) the best Tele amp I've got, over the three all tube Fender heads and the Marshalls.

Maybe it'll be better if you look at Randall as the "Marshall" of the SS world. :P

We'll see. I bought it mainly for nastolgic reasons ... and because it was dirt cheap!! LOL! Maybe it'll sound like crap just like the one I had in the 80s.

I listened to the comparison clip you sent me. It was surprizingly close to the DSL50.
I always thought they sounded like a distortion pedal througha SS power amp.

Back when I had one in the 80s I didn't know any better, so I set everything (except the master) on 10 ... after all, isn't that what you're supposed to do?!

To make it worse, they have a pull function on the treble pot that acts like a compressor and drops the overall volume. Now you're in total metal zone land. Sustain and sizzle for days. Now try going from bedroom level to playing at a gig ... that's where I grew to hate that amp. Most of it was my own stupidity because I didn't know anything about tone. I don't solid state was meant to be heard with all the tone controls on 10 LOL!

I'm not holding my breathe, but it should be interesting to try out again. If it sux, it's going right back up on ebay. :)
