Bacino vs EC pinstripe grillcloth

Post by Mars Hall » Fri Feb 11, 2011 8:28 am

What are the opinions of those who've handled both? I'm considering the Bacino cloth that felow forum member shakti has for sale as a price conscience alternative.

I know you were asking about the Bacino vs EC but I have to say that the EC is absolutely spot on. Identical to my original pinstripe in every respect, shame it is so expensive. I will be buying some more (next months payslip  ).

This is how shakti described it to me, 'The cloth has a rubberized texture...imagine a thick version of the texture you sometimes get on t-shirts with prints. Compared to the EC cloth, the latter is a bit heavier, the rubber is just a little bit more "rubbery", but I'm not convinced it's necessarily thicker as far as tonal response. The backing cloth of the Bacino stuff is a little denser woven, whereas the EC is actually more transparent, but has the threads crossing at a slanted angle. So the short answer is: they're not identical - the EC is heavier (probably the rubber is heavier) but the backing cloth is actually a bit more transparent, whereas the Bacino has the rubbery texture, a slightly softer but more densely woven backing cloth, and is a little bit lighter.'

The only other guy I remember using the Bacino cloth was 908ssp on his recreation of Clapton's 66 BB, I don't know if he's had any experience with the EC stuff for comparasion.

A local tech has seen the Bacino cloth compared to his original Series I, he seemed impressed.

I contacted Mike Bacino, he's been gearing up to make sheets big enough for a 4x12 so maybe sometime in the near future there will be a little competition for EC, to level the playing field and give us an alternative, 8) but who knows how long that will take.

The Bacino cloth doesn't suck, but it stretches more than the EC cloth, which is practically indistinguishable from the original pinstripe cloth.

Did you have sagging problems after a certain amount of time or was that just a nusance when installing? In the older threads I've read you were looking into the possibilities of developing a reproduction, what happened, the EC stuff?

I just got my free 4" "swatch" of EC Bluesbreaker cloth today from Eric C. Collins. It looks NICE. He staples it in a really neat-looking postcard w/ excellent imagery of Jimi Hendrix & Bluesbreaker+Cream-era Clapton on it with a business card included. Thanks Eric! This was really awesome to check out... :jimi:

No, I got a small piece to check out from another forum member. I also had an original piece from Udo Piper, and the EC swatch he sends out to checkout.

But I did pull on the fabric to see what stretching would be like, and it does stretch more then the EC cloth since the backing cloth on the Bacino was more elastic. This should only be a problem during installation, requiring more staples to keep straight. Other than that, if you pull your cloth tight and straight, then staple it down you should be fine with any of these cloths.

My pinstripe repro project couldn't get the quality I wanted, due to printing alignment, so I finally shelved it, and just went with the EC cloth.

Just wanted to chime in with my own experience...the Bacino cloth stays on my Bluesbreaker, looks great, and has not sagged in the 2+ years it's been on there. For my 4x12s I wanted the pinstripe to match on both, so I ponied up the money for the EC cloth and don't regret it. It really is spot on, but I do not feel compelled to swap the cloth on my Bluesbreaker for that reason...

Thanks everyone for all of your thoughts on your experience. Looking forward to getting this grillcloth on my amp. Thanks shakti. The EC cloth may be more accurate to the original but in my case, "good enough" is good enough. 8)

I spoke with Mike Bacino when I found out about his product. Currently he's not producing it but is gearing up to have piece's large enough to do a 4x12. He did not give me a time frame.
