This forum is so cool. Here's something I've been thinking about for awhile.

Ralle is using different tubes than Eddie- should be 6ca7, Reissue g12m- should be g12h, and some different filtering if we believe ******'s specs. It seems that Ralle may have kept tweaking his set up until he had it tuned to his liking. His set up is very similar but does have some differences. I guess I'm just curious if anyone has yet proposed that there maybe more than one way to get EVH tone? Wht do you guys think of this? Maybe we all need to tweak our set up for our own touch and style of playing?

I think that individual things such as tubes make a huge difference when you actually play the amp yourself, but on a recording your playing is a way bigger factor in that tone then tubes. If theres anything he has thats different that makes a real difference its his celestion loaded cab and his pickups. The things in his amp like filtering, tubes, and board values probably wont come up as being really noticeable on a recording even if it makes a huge difference in person. So like you said tweak the values to what you prefer. What sounds like evh more with you playing your amp probably wont be exactly what Ralle si using or what the magic marshall specs are.

You’re kidding, right? All the pics I’ve seen of the back of Eddies head(s) (’78 tour & VHII sessions) looked like big bottle EL34s.

i didn't think this would be disrespectful to post. as well i thought it was some good info. ;)
hello mark thanks for stopping to email me .i am a specialist in this game and it is very tough to make good calls, however i grew up with edward vanhalen and pretty much know what he fueled the 68 with.usually and at its best it was powered by xf2 phillips amperex ...basically mullards by another brand name the brown base ones were seen in his amps more then anyother in the early days due to road wear he converted to 6ca7 and the sound was distinctive but 6550s eventually took over by 3rd world tour .the 34s could not take the beating the 6550s .and they kinda lost there tone from the old days anyhow big club does not translate to arena or stadium .so it didnt much matter there are few alternatives unfortunatly to really nail the vibe and mullards or better still the brown base phillips is the closest you can get and they are hard to match you may pay up to 800 dollars for nos new old stock .its horrible how tubes have climbed out of reach of those who need and use them .because of audiophiles idiots that think they can hear a differnece beteen xf3s 4s 1s double getter single brown base whatever.mullards i sell are in the new test range but are definetly not quite new.no one has em and if they do prepare to pay 150 to 250 per tube i sell my quartets for 300 of the best xf2s about 250 for xlnt xf4s and brown base heerlen style for about 275 .i will show you some other alternatives for much cheaper but van halens tone was built around and amp that was built around mullards ,and there aint no gettin round that.i have 4 xlnt quartets ranging from 250 to 325 at the moment serious tubes that test and match .the mullard is also the hardest tube ever made to get solid mc and ma matches on.ive done this with alot of odd balls left over i bought them from the two best sources in the us and paid too much ,but my customers demand them and i try to get top flight stuff out at about 40 percent or more lower then my competitors who by the way are get tin there fannys waxed daily .i work real hard 12 hours a day on tubes and aquistion of tubes .most of them fat dogs just sit around on there fat asses and put out list of what they want and swallow 200 percent profit margins.nor do they play .i have 26 amps and 6 of em are built for testing purposes .so your in good hands .there are cheaper alternatives that would work well you gotta make sure you have correct driver tubes .get back to me.l,.
