Parallel speaker wiring question

Post by SavageBlitz50 » Wed Jul 07, 2010 4:57 pm

Hi, I know this is unorthodox but would it work wired in parallel?

16ohm speaker + 16 ohm speaker + 8 ohm speaker (all in parallel) = 4 ohms?

1/(1/16 + 1/16 + 1/8) = 4 ohms? Am I doing this correctly? Just want to double check with the forum. Thanks

Your 8 ohm speaker will draw twice as much power as the 16 ohm speakers (ohms law crap) so I wouldn't advise it. Three 16's or three 8's, sure, I think it winds up at 5.33 ohms (not exactly sure, someone else did the math a few years ago), so setting it at 8 or 4 "should" work.

Once again, this is not something I do or recommend, so you're on your own.

Jim is right. You'll be hittin' the single 8 Ohm with half your amp's power. But the array is 4 Ohms total like you have. Be sure of the speaker and amp ratings. A good rule, 100W amp rating = 200W peak rating. If your amp is 100W, I'd only consider trying it if the 8 Ohm speaker is rated for 100W and in good shape.
Have a good one,

Thanks, I appreciate it. Interesting that it draws twice the power. The amp is 50 watts, so 50/3 is about 17. So would the 8 ohm speaker draw 2x17 (34 watts) or 50% of the total watts available (50/2) so 25 watts?

Thanks

Thanks
1/2 the amps power. But bear in mind (Marshall) 50 watters can kick out up to around 90watts flat out.
