Who is this "EVH"?

Post by Eoin » Thu Nov 10, 2005 3:01 pm

Just kidding.

But seriously, which Van Halen albums should I own to truly understand what the hell you guys are talking about? :)

I'm sorry, I'm only 22... Jerry Cantrell is my idea of tone. But my occupation demands an open-mind, and as much understanding of what other people like to hear as possible.

Eoin

My favorites are his early demos. You can scour the net and find those. The first album (Translation: CD  ) is a must. His tone on that one smokes. You may not be instantly hooked…but just try & dial that tone in with your rig…then you’ll appreciate how unique & powerful it really is. Good luck & enjoy.

22 huh…I was 22 once…’can’t even remember what that was like. Enjoy it while it lasts... :D

IMO - the David Lee Roth era album that is the least representative of the EVH tone is "1984." It sounds like he was searching for the next evolutionary step in his sound and I think it sounds a little half-baked. I think he was experimenting with the Palmer signal direct instead of pure speaker sound. Unfortunately, after that (the Van Hagar era) he found the next evolutionary step and it was interesting but it lacked the raw emotion of the DLR era. Get 1984 - but don't start there - start with VH1 and you'll see what all the hub-bub is about!!

Ahh....1978...senior in high school in art class and somebody put on the first VH album..yes..it was an album..hehe. And All I remember is thinking holy sh**! "You Really got me" was playing and I said to my buddy..Damn..Thats an awesome remake the Kinks did and the guitar is killin! And of course he corrected me by telling who it was..I also remeber seeing "Pre VH" when they were called Mammoth in southern california when they'd play backyard partys and some clubs around there...cool stuff!

I remember readint hat 1984 was VH's best tone in his opinin. In that same article he said he didnt get the fascination with VH1 tone and he thought it was way too trebly and harsh but the engineers then had more to do with it then he did.

I thought 1984 woulda been a great tone....it's just that in spots it had a sort of high end sheen to it, like someone stuck a damn chorus on there.
I'll stick with VHII and Fair Warning for EVH tone though, thanks.

I think its so cool that people are going for the VH sound. I think there are so many great sounds from great palyers, but his TONE was so awesome.

Here's a funny story:
I first heard Eddie when I was 13. I was in a catholic school. During a music appreciation type of class the teacher let people bring in records that we could share with the class. This other guy in class named Wesley (I'm also named Wes) brought VH1 in. He told her to play the first track. Of course it was Runnin with the Devil. The look of shock on the Nun's face was priceless. I'm sure she was even more horrified because the class was held in the Nun's convent.

I just remember being totally blown away and immediately went out and bought the record and listened to it every day. During that class, I definitely remember that it was the sound of his guitar that really caught me. I started playing guitar several months later.

So , I think its great that people are chasing his tone. Its undoubtedly one of the great tones of Rock n roll history and no one should be ashamed of trying to duplicate it. there is a reason it made me start playing guitar and there is a reason so many people are going for it. It was INCREDIBLE and his playing had an energy that was unheard of.

That being said I think it is true that no one found their own greatness by copying someone else. You have to find your own voice to make a true impact in the world of music. To paraphrase Hendrix "Find yourself first, Then find your tool, You better find yourself first, don't you be no fool" I probably didn't get that exactly right, but it was a great Message of Love from the master.

But I'll probably build up a VH amp in the near future once some of you guys figure out the formula. I think it would be fun to finally get that sound. I think Rockstah, Ralle and company will probably figure out the secret. This place is so great. Please excuse me just lurking around for awhile before I start a project. I really enjoy reading this forum. You are all so cool.

Wes

Yeah OK Rockstah, but its time and money right now. I'm going to have to sell some things before I start a project.

BTW EION, I think Jerry Cantrell's tones on Dirt were phenomenal.

Well we have a difference of opinion about Jerry's sound, but would you guys agree that he's a killer player with alot of style and nuance?
