New forumite intro with ???'s

Post by Papag » Wed Jul 22, 2009 7:36 pm

Howdy!

My name is Ralph, and I'm an ampaholic. I've been reading the board for some time and am almost ready to purchase and build my first kit, but am undecided as to what I really want to build. If I had the money, I would build one of each but can't do that. I know the sounds of the 12xxx series quite well and love it. However, the 45/100 would be nice too. Here is my dilemma. The only sound reference I have on the 45/100 (that I know of) is Jimi. His strat tone is not only legendary, but MONSTEROUS! I primarily play a lester and PRS McCarty models. I have searched for sound clips but have had no success finding any. Can any of you help me out with this? I would greatly appreciate any and all sound clips as reference to help me decide.

Hey Ralph,

I'm newer here as well, this place is great!

Since you seem to be a HB player, 45/100 sounds that I can take off the top of my head(for HB's) would definitely be some of Kossof's work, and some of Cream as well.

The 45/100 doesn't have George's awesome instructions, but there are all the parts in the store if you think you are up to it(There is a schematic, diagram, and bill of materials). If you haven't any amp building experience, I'd recommend getting one of the kits, 50w, 100w, or JTM-45.

What sound are you going for exactly? No matter what you do, it will sound marshall, but you'll soon realize the finer differences of the NMV marshalls. I'd say the most different out of the bunch are probably the 45 and the 12 series.

Thanks for the welcome all,

The "sound in my head", clearly, is Clapton on Crossroads along with Duane Allman (without the JBLs). Neal Schon's tone is another that sticks in my head as well (MONSTER player who doesn't get enough love). That is why I think I lean more towards the 67. The 68 sounds killer but is probably too aggressive for my style of playing (rockin' blues and rock). I think all of these can be had thru a 67. I currently using a BF Twin and sometimes it just sounds too sterile to me. Any comments, caveats are welcomed.

If you're at all worried about needing instructions to help along the way, a good alternative is to build the standard '69 kit as a Super Bass, and add a bright cap on the Volume I control. That one cap is the only difference between a '67 Lead and a '67 Bass, and the later Super Bass stays faithful to that old JTM preamp circuit.
The kit comes with all the components for either Lead or Bass already, and I made sure to put some nice pictures in the instructions for Super Bass builders.

Cool.... shouldn't be a problem. I grew up with electronics. My Dad owned a radio and tv repair shop back in the 50's and 60's (yeah, I'm a relic too) and I know what I am doing when it comes to soldering and reading diagrams and schematics. Those ole' Marshalls just have that soul I'm wishing my twin had. yeah, it's LOUD and CLEAN, but...... that's about it to my ears any more.

And is I can find a schematic...I wanna build and install the Japanese version of the Fernandez Sustainer in one of my LP's.
