Really nice playing. I'm such a hack I don't have much clue what you're talking about, but I could hear subtle differences. I think I should have taken up the triangle or something like that.

Backwards...I grew up in south FL and moved up to NYC in the mid-90s. But I still have trouble with that mode.

I
Don't
Phart
Like
Monkeys
And
Lamas

Thats how I was told to remember the modes, unfortunately, I never use them, but I should, since they can provide excellent variation to soloing.

Great clips Mark! I must have missed this thread earlier.

Most of you may know this but here's another way of thinking about modes:

Mode - basic type and additional info
Ionian - major
Dorian - minor with a major 6th
Phrygian - minor with a flat 2nd and 6th
Lydian - major with a sharp 4th (or 11th)
Mixolydian - major with a flat 7th (dominant 7)
Aeolian - minor ("natural" or "relative"); flat 6th; always 3 frets below the major Ionian
Locrian - minor with flat 2nd, 5th and 6th

All major modes have a major 3rd and a major 7th (except Mixolydian which has a flat 7th). All minor modes have a flat/minor 3rd and a flat 7th.

Also, an easy way to hear the modes on a piano is to play in the key of C (white keys only  ) and start the scale on each note of the C major scale:
C D E F G A B (Ionian)
D E F G A B C (Dorian)
E F G A B C D (Phrygian)
F G A B C D E (Lydian)
G A B C D E F (Mixolydian)
A B C D E F G (Aeolian)
B C D E F G A (Locrian)
