Sounds fantastic Rob!!
Which pup was that? DSD? Which value is the bright cap at the vol pot and how is your NFB set? Man, one of the best tones I've heard .. it has all the warmth, chewyness and that smack in the solo notes that I love and can't seem to get in my amp
Also, which tubes??
Keep coming the clips man,

What was the speaker variac down to on the dial? what were your thoughts to the feel/tone using the second variac.

Are both V1 couplers .022's? Hard to tell from the pic.

Thanks man! PUP is from the Fender/EVH B&W Stripe...
Bright cap on vol pot: It looks like it's removed. Don't know why though - i usually enjoy a 5600pf
NFB wired to 8 ohm i think. NFB resistor 27K i think.

The speaker variac is a curious thing. Part of it depends on how you hook it up: AMP SPKR OUT connected to VARIAC MALE which what I would call normal. Or backward... AMP SPKR OUT to the female.
It seems to sound best when you hook it up backwards. But when you hook it up that way, it's a little less clear what is happening to the tone in relation to the setting. Hooked up forwards it seems to track linearly where lower voltage settings are thinner and quieter. Backwards though it's a little less like a linear reaction. I had it set at about 60V in the clip. The AMP variac was at about 60V too.
It feels really really good in the room. Browned out but yet at the same time boiling over.

Hell of a thing, isn't it. I think I would argue that this is better than sliced bread. In fact, I'm gonna call my variacs bread and butter from now on.

Rob, man after hearing your tone here, I had to put a hat on so I could take it off for you
Amazing browness and playing articulation !

Sliced bread? Maybe a toaster as a load next?
Good tone Rob.
Nice to see people still trying new ideas out.

yes - there is the difference between vhi and vhii so can't be getting both tones with the exact same setup. i think there is a core piece in the way this setup grinds. maybe this is a common element across all the early albums.
here is a W&CF clip for comparison:
http://www.robgalpin.com/wp-content/upl ... TYWH-2.mp3
the volume in the room - it's not very loud at all - like not even close to the volume of a snare drum. when i get some time i am going to make some clips at snare drum volume to see what that adds. i am assuming it will add some more knock and backbone - which is one element that is a little weak in this setup at low volume -
