Tone Stack 750pF treble cap?

Post by RRJackson » Tue Jun 30, 2015 3:10 pm

Anyone ever tried this? I was playing around with the Duncan Tone Stack Calculator and it seems like an interesting way to go. I was wondering if anyone had tried it in an actual amp. I'm starting a JTM50 build and I've been doing the typical dancing around what values to start with.

As I remember, people always trying to lower the value of this cap, you are the first who wants to raise it :) Don't forget that before the tone stack there are number of gain stages, and every one of them has it's own impact on the frequency, so you can't tell very accurately what cap to use in that position without knowing what is going on before the tone stack, and that's what this calculator do not show you...

It just seems like it should suffer less insertion loss and lose a little of the scooped nature at certain settings. If it goes sideways I can always replace it easily. I was just asking in the hope that someone else had given it a shot!

Parallel a 250 across your 470 or 500 and see if you like it. Put it on a switch with alligator clips for a/b test.

Just remembered! Lee Jackson did that! Actually he had more than 2 options for that cap. He used rotary switch with number of capacitors. Google for M1000 by Lee Jackson

I remember those Metaltronix amps had a mid-shift that was pretty cool. I don't know why Lee Jackson never seemed to get more traction than he did.
