hey all,
i rebuilt my old hilgen bass amp that i got from a friend for free. basicly it currently has a jtm45 style power section with cheopo chinese 6l6gc's, sovtek 5ar4 tube recto, 100 ohm-10watt resistor for a choke. the power tubes sound decent for the money. it has a #34 2203 style preamp section. my question is this, with a plate voltage around 390v without tubes and around 360v with tubes, should i even be using 6l6's. what other power tubes could i use with this kind of plate voltage or what should i be using? the amp is in the 30watt range as far as power goes.
also when i set it up for the 6l6's, all i had on hand were 5k screen resistors and 5.6k grid resistors......i dont know how this affects the tone or performance of the tube, but it sounds pretty good actually. its got a nice plex'ish type of sound to the amp as is, but was maybe going to experiment with different power tubes, so any help would be great. i dont want to change the sockets though.
