I really dig that tone he have here it's so raw and nasty!
Of course It is quite obvious that there is a fuzz involved, but anyway.

Re: Billy gibbons amp 1980?
I don't know but I would kill for the tone he got in the 70s. On three albums. Tres Hombres, Fandango and Tejas. Best tone I have EVER heard. Man on the song "La Grange" he plays a strat on the first solo and a Les Paul on the one at the end. Both are awesome but the one at the end is the best guitar solo I have ever heard. He makes about 12 different apparent notes out of what are actually 2 different notes. He was bad back then.
I used to have an old 80 watt Orange head that I could make sound closer to that tone than any other amp I have ever played through.

Didn´t he use Rio Grande amps wich were sort of a Marshall clone? Think he uses some distortion/overdrive pedals also.

I've got to locate one of those "Rio Grande" amps that Billy claims to have used years ago. I believe it was in an old Guitar Player magazine where he stated that he had gotten the "Rio Grande Amp(s)" from a place on the Texas Gulf coast called "Jake's Amp & Bait Shop" - Believe It Or Not.

Actually figuring out what amps and effects Billy G. used or is using is akin to the old Van Halen stock vrs modded amp urban legend, Jeff Beck's putting amps on stage that he doesn't actually play through. The 50 or whatever it was Bixonic Expandora's in series, ect. The legendary amp shack, ect.

I saw a clip from a recent EC Crossroads 2010, the one with Bill Murray as host/role player and he had his Bo style Gretsch and a just nasty greasy Texas T gut bucket sound just a the touch of his volume control.
I know he did have the re boxed and labeled Marshall's at one time, Rio Grande's?
I know he even took a liking to Marshall's Valvestate amps as well for a spell.
Billy G. had mojo that runs deep, he has the winning boys magick, to quote the movie "Crossroads."
I never tire of hearing them play as I feel about early James Gang with Joe Walsh.
Awhile back Steve Stevens wrote on his Facebook page about how a Camp Freddy gig he did with the Rev. blew his mind as Billy had a rental JCM 900 and still managed to go to church with whatever he was handed.
This impressed SS very much and he was in awe of Billy's skills.
Ground down peso pieces, sixpence pieces in the case of Brian May, these are the tools in the toolbox, but the tools only enhance the skill of the craftsman using them, not the other way round.
And no this does not answer the question on BG's 1980 amp, but I felt compelled to jump in here to say that Billys 'format' never gets old for me.
Cool cars and geetars, it never gets old for me, always fresh..

The way they interplay and how Billy effortlessly slides in front of behind and all around the groove is an object lesson in not just Texas blues, but blues in general!!

Re: Billy gibbons amp 1980?
I'm not really sure at what point in Billy's career that he used the Rio Grande amps, but what a story it makes for. Can you imagine going into a bait shop and seeing amp heads and cabinets amongst bait and fishing supplies and going, "Well that saves me a trip, it just so happened that I was just looking for a -----------, and here it is how convenient".
