EVH Frankenstein Pickup vs. SD '78 - Clips Added

Post by stramm8 » Wed Oct 14, 2009 10:51 pm

What's up folks?? This is my first post here and I really dig this site! I picked up an EVH Frankenstein Humbucker one ebay the other day (used, no less!) and it showed up yesterday. I bought it for my new Franky inspired axe I'm building but I'm gonna drop it in my Frank replica for a little dry run. I currently have a SD '78 in it, which I love so I'm really excited to see what this thing sounds like. I plan to post some before and after YT clips, so stay tuned...

Ok, here are a couple of clips I put together comparing the two pick ups. Please excuse the sloppy playing :D The jury is still out for me since I haven't had a chance to play it with the volume cranked. They both sound great but the Frankenstein has a tighter bottom end, a tad more hair and sustain.

Going to swap out the sustain block on the original floyd with a big block upgrade next...

Cool man, welcome. Very interested in your pickup test. I have the Frankie p/up and love it. Curoous about the '78. Give us the woods and hardware, amp, speakers, etc. when you get a chance.
At it awhile, still learnin'

This is the guitar I will be performing the test with. It's a frankenstein replica that I've had for about 12 years that has been evolving ever since. It's a WD swamp ash body with a Warmoth neck, an original '80s Floyd Rose, Shaller tuners, SD '78 pick up, 500K volume pot etc. The guitar I'm getting ready to build is going to be basically the same deal with out the EVH paintjob...

cool guitar man. What is the radius on your neck? 12-16?

Swamp ash is brighter than northern ash isn't it? Plus the floyd would that guitar quite bright.

It seems to me the Franky pu has oodles more sustain and compresses the notes more, not as raw sounding ? But easier to play? Is that accurate?

Which do you favor?

According to plexified, the SD custom custom sounds killer with a floyd. Maybe someone who has one would be willing to lend you one for a test? While I am at it, the second degree black belt is a must for you to add to your test, recall Stan's clips!

I am happy that your clip accurately portrays the SD 78.

The kids were in bed and I was too impatient to wait :D If you listen to it with earbuds you can get a better idea. I am going to post some louder clips since I also swapped out the sustain block on the floyd...

I believe the radius on this neck is 10-16, its pretty flat. The guitar I'm getting ready to put together will have a northern ash body so, I guess we'll know if swamp ash is brighter. I've never had a northern ash body so, I couldn't comment.

To me, the '78 is a little easier to play although when I first put the frank in, I couldn't tell too much of a difference  I had to play for a while and listen and the frank definately has a more focused bass response and more sustain. I think it also has more mids 'cause I can hear a noticeable "honk" with some notes, which I like. Due to the higher output, I was hoping it would be easier to coax some zakk wylde type of pick squeals out of the lower notes on the low E but so far that's not the case. I may need to tweak the set up a little.

So far, I don't prefer one over the other. I knew I wanted to try this pickup and I knew that I didn't want to ditch the '78, so that's why I am building another guitar specifically for the frankenstein pick up.

I would love to try some other pickups to find the "one", especially the MCPs. This stuff is so subjective. Back when I was gigging alot, I used to load all my guitars with Gibson 500Ts. I absolutely love that pick up and to me they sound great in everything, but that's me. Although, I love everything EVH, I've never tried to completely nail his tone. My goal is that certain "things" sound evh inspired since I can't really play like him

hehe yeah the 500T's are damn fun to play on. At 16 K+ it is quite hot! Very tight bass, little sharp or thin on the highs though. It is a ceramic.

The EVH 78 is 8.9 K I think and the Franky pu is 13+K so it is quite a bit hotter. I thought they sounded very different while within the general sound category. I am REALLY curious how a motor city second degree black belt sounds in your guitar, of Stan's extensive pickup test, this is one pickup that killed the 2 pu's above. I would also love to hear the 59 -which sounds killeri rockstah's guitar.

Hi!

Did You compare those two pickups with Wolfgangs? Your description of Franky is quite interesting to what I am looking for as for the tone.

Nope. I don't currently own a wolfgang, so nothing to compare it to other than my past experience with them. If I recall, the wolfgang pickups had more bottom end and better harmonics. The EVH sounds more PAFish to me.

Still needs to be louder or find some way of micing the amp and mux the video and audio.

Still waiting for a proper demo of this humbucker in general on the net, everyone seems to be using amps that I cant make a comparison in my head with lol

I agree with the lack of good demos out there...that's why I bought one. It's the only way you're gonna know...

Thanks man, that's what I wanted to know. I started to think about buying Frankenstein, but from what You write I assume that Wolfgang fits better my needs.
