6L6 type for 600v

Post by Gtr_tech » Wed Mar 23, 2005 9:51 pm

Any current production 6L6 types beefy enough to take over 600v on the plates? I have an Ampeg V2 in for restoration and de-hack from a botched 6550 mod attempt and have to find some output tubes that'll hang with that brutal Va. Tried a pair of older Svetlana 6L's, but they made me nervous when they began to red plate at 19w. KT88's pulled the heater v down a little much for my taste.

George: got plate curves and max ratings for the VA KT66?

Man, if you find a 6L6 that can hack it in there post it so I know what I can put in my Music Man 75 besides tracking down NOS Sylvania STR's......

I put some Svets in a V2 last year but the amp sounded so crappy it was only used for a couple of hours. Don't remember what the plate or bias voltage wound up being, but they didn't glow red.

Sovtek now offers a 7027 but I'm betting it's just a relabled 6L6 and probably no more rugged.

Check out this page from Triode Electronics. The subject of 7027's and alternate tubes in Ampegs is specifically addressed at length. Here's the link: http://www.triodeel.com/7027.htm

Forgot to mention that I rebuilt the bias circuit in the amp I mentioned in the previous reply. I think the material in the link I posted recommends it as well.

Heya flames....

If the pwr transformer is the same as the MM amps that used EL34s, you could prolly set it up for an EL34 or variant as long as the htr winding will take it. Strange cathode driven output circuit w/ hot plate v.

I'm thinkin' I may try some JJ 6l6s in the Ampeg and see how they do. JJ pwr tubes seem to be some of the more durable ones out there. They must be able to take the extra voltage stress since thier "7027a" uses the same plate structure as the 6Ls.
