My question is, why not UF5408's...

So I like purple, okay!!!!!!

That is what I use in newer builds - bought a few from George via the old store.demonufo wrote:My question is, why not UF5408's...

I got a massive bag load from RS on my last big order. Work well for me. I never bother in the bias supply though, as that is just ridiculous overkill, but I do still use UF4007's. Given the pennies difference between fast and ultra fast recovery types, it's just a no-brainer regardless of whether or not I can prove that the reduced hash makes a difference.

Re: Rectifier Diodes UF4007 vs 1N5408 Clips
can anyone confirm the following:
UF5408 is the same "speed" as UF4007 - the only difference is UF5408 is the 3A version whereas UF4007 is 1A. TRUE?

I really could not tell any difference between the clips. I have been using 1N5408s of late instead of ganging 1N4007s together.

Yes the uf5408 is the 3 amp heavy duty version of the uf4007 1 amp recitifier.rgalpin wrote:can anyone confirm the following:

Even though I ordered IN5408's from George a long time ago, he sent UF5408. When I questioned him about the UF rating he said the difference was marginal and that he uses them in his Metropolous builds. I still seem to prefer the IN5408 and the IN4007 verison when hearing clips for some reason?

Yes, I hear a huge difference LIVE. It's like when you play next to a live drummer using a SS amp - and that same SS setup that sounds wonderful in your living room sounds lifeless and weird in a live setup - it adds an obvious SS coating obscuring the organic wonder of the 1959 sound.
harddriver, thanks for the info.
I think the best setup is to use the slow ones in the rectifier and the fast one in the bias.
