'77 JMP modded a la Friedman. Audio clips!

Post by Carbia » Tue Mar 17, 2015 4:40 am

Hey guys!

I've recently modded my '77 JMP master volume to a Friedman's Brown Eye spec, or as close as I could since there's no "oficial" schematics around, so I had to dig in photos around the net and try many variations.

I'm very impressed with the results and I think is the ultimate marshall mod.

I've recorded some clips. I couldn't capture the sound as good as it is in front of the amp, but you can get the idea.

First clip: Gain around 8-9, all around 5 in the EQ

Second clip: Gain around 4, some more bass in the EQ and the rest relatively flat.

Third clip: SAT switch engaged, gain around 9, bass rolled off to 3, treble and presence to 6, mids at 5.

Just to finish I have to congratulate Dave Friedman. I think his circuit is SO GREAT.
Ah, and don't ask me to post an schematic, I think Dave's work deserves to be kept in secret.

sounds damn sweet. Sounds like there's no bright cap? or no mixer cap? that amp would sound nice with a touch more top end bite but if smooth is what you're after, that one has it. Sounds real nice. lot's of real vintage character. Nice to see people building amps that sound like the originals instead of buzzy preamps posing as vintage sound.

No bright cap, it doesn't need in my opinion. The amp is recorded at low master volume setting at that contributes to a little bit darker sound, but anyway, there's no treble harsh at all in this amp. Canbe dialed trebly, of course, but in a musical way, not to sound like a chainsaw

Thanks for listening

I definitely like that. Thru my speakers and ears, it seemed to have plenty of bite. Good job... :toast:

Sounds pretty good to me, not too harsh, plenty of harmonics and gain

It's a regular master, like a 2203.
I like this with this circuit.
With plexis, I prefer the LarMar
