Jamies crying clip, my rig.. opinions??

Hi to all,

I am a new poster but I have been here skulking about from time to time.. Many great ears abound!! I was hoping to get some feedback on my rig doing a version of jamies crying… its a clip I recorded into my laptop with a Sure sm81 mic. No post, just what the mic picked up off the speaker. Anyway be gentle

no pun intended, but my sister is no 1 prostitute in all khaz.... never mind

The amp is kinda marshall like .. I made it. I used a hall of fame in front and a echorec, also in front. Of course I have the MXR flanger and phase 90.. I didnt use them for jamies though .. but even off they help..

I have a new mic that I am messing with so I want to try a few things.... Its still not sounding as good on tape as I would like, still a weird boomyness somewhere... its not in the amp. figured the 81 was the problem so a new mic. Ill post results later

Well the mic test went well, I ended up with this.... 1984 tone????

I think if I added my 949 it just might pass. Maybe Eddie used the same rig on 1984??? Was the studio the diff???? I think its just because he's Eddie.

I did the outro to Drop Dead Legs. As always its my interpretation of the music... I dont do note for note.. it aint me.

Hi all!!!

Well I think the closest I got was the jamies crying clip.... Not patting myself on the back just trying to evaluate my results good and bad. Something about that clip is right, other things are off ..

I would attribute the "right" to the interesting peak somewhere around 2khz and another somewhere around 200hz. The cool woody sizzle you hear on the two note (sweetened B string tuned) chord is a result of those peaks... VH1 lives somewhere is this neighborhood IMO. That parts sounds close to my ears.

The bad to my ears is the the weird nasal midrange that is probably a mic placement issue. I need to work this out with more experiments in mic placement. No amount of post eq tweeking can get rid of it without killing the patient. It must be dealt with at the source. I need that rubbery low mid.

Today... and I mean all day, I will be playing with mics. I need a better set of headphones too, Ive been using my iphone earbuds to position the mics ..... LOL

I am certain that the key to the sound is all in mic placements. Two mics minimum. Next in importance would be the speaker/s... and after that the amp (it must have the right type and amount of clipping).

Hmmmm Maybe there is no magic part after all???? Just a particular recording technique??? Heresy I know!!

Anyway more results will be posted today.. that means clips.

Its closer in some ways and farther away in others. Once again I dont care about little msitakes in timing.. I have no click..just plowing thru>>> one take. Wish more people didnt care about their mistakes.. Ed never does. Get over your fear

Here is the latest thing. I put my rig through a Supro speaker. Yup the same little piece o crap combo your thinking. Just barrel jacked the signal into the speaker and put the sm58 on it ..
