Almost looks like a neck plate in there.

Looks like 2 plates and a 3rd home cut piece of aluminum.

Just fingered it out me thinks...
That looks like the initial or original set up was a recessed Tremolo and now possibly a "top mount" ? :what:
Seems plausible since it's some type of repair or mod.

This pic just struck me funny 'cause I've never seen that "sandwich" before ? :D
Just like that brass sustain block with bridge studs, repairing the wood to accept a 2 point whammy.

uhuh & All this whammy shite must be a real challenge to each manufacturer redesigning Leo's Synchronized Tremolo.
FR was on to something; locking nut and all. There are other ways, and tuners thanks to technology that would be alternatives in design... Ibanez redesigning the "fulcrum point". Innovative and awesome to others and their techniques. Just doesn't feel right to me, and not my cup of tea. Ibanez Lo-Pro EDGE is the best I'm gonna' get personally. Gotoh needs to reissue that Lo-Pro if they are offering it in the EDGE ??? The inherit problem of the EDGE & 1996T is in the fine tuners as they push forward your picking position. If you play a Stratocaster it's like being forced to play over the middle pickup... :palm:

That is plausible. It wasn't singing to me that one would have to take a router to the neck pocket for a sustain block there. 8)
