50 Watt Plexi with GZ34

Post by maxwedge572 » Sat Mar 15, 2014 1:01 pm

I'm thinking about doing my next build like this, 50 watt Plexi split cathode but with a GZ34 rectifier. What do you think? :?:
I have the JTM45 I built and my repaired 74 JMP50 (68 spec) and I was going to do a Black Flag but I think that this sounds like a better idea for summer fun! :)

I've built just that, lead spec and totally smokes! Sold it on Ebay for a song, no reserve. :(
Sniped by the brother of a lead guitarist for a band from Michigan that opened for the NFL a few years ago. Sounded great live. Nuff said about that, argh.
Great sounding version of the '68 spec.

That sucks about losing $ on that, bummer! That's one reason I hate to sell things but.... this one is for me and will be mostly all NOS inside plus I have a set of Marstran transformers for it. I've also been thinking about tremolo but a 50 watt chassis for that would be harder to source outside of having one made my self.
Thanks for the feedback, Fritz

You're very welcome for the feedback. Much pun intended literally!
I want to build another as I have a Drake 139 tranny on hand. Plan on trying the new gen Sozos.
I documented the build I mentioned, and have gut shots for personal reference. I did use .10 output coupling caps, like the thicker, fatter tone personally. But we build em' we can tweak em' to taste! :toast:

This is what my next build will probably end up being. I am aiming at a JTM50 with a GZ34 but have in my mind possibly (probably) a split cathode lead spec.

Built it correctly as stock and you might be surprised (just lower value of first cathode cap and use a small bright cap.

I think I'll stick with the .1 output caps and the 270pf/56k tone stack too but I'm going to use the .68uf bypass cap on v2a.

I'm planing on a longer 29 turret board to accommodate the on board 32/32 like a few of the vintage amps I've looked at but I'm having problems sourcing brown board material. Real pain looking for that stuff but I do have some G10/FR4 glass epoxy board in natural coming. It's kind of a yellow/green color and may look alright but I'm not sure I want to use it for this build.
Got it here and had them cut it to my spec and I'll end up with 6 undrilled boards.
