Super 70s - second look

[Tone Slinger]

alnico8 which is pretty close to ceramic I've been told. The Super70's are pretty low output,like around 8k I think. I find that lower output pu's fare better in set neck, 24 3/4 scale instruments (Gibson for ex.), cause these inherently have a tone characteristic that is warmer, fatter and has less high end. The weaker pu can give chime and detail to them.

On 25 1/2 scale instruments (Fender for ex.) , you get more 'throw' to the sound.The tone is inherently brighter and dynamic. Putting a weaker pu in one of these can make these characteristics TOO prominent . A higher output pu introduces more mids and bottom.These are my observations using a Metro 12xxx. New hi gain,push/pull eq boost, etc amps, can pretty much give ANY pu type what it needs to sound as the player wants though.

FYI, the guys over at the Seymour Duncan forum have said that swapping an alnico 8 magnet into a '59 will get you pretty close to a Super 70.

IMHO, the SH-5 has to be one of the most boring, un-happening pick-up out there. I have a modern one and a "vintage" one.
I am yet to try the vintage one ( ) but the modern one is dark, dull and without breadth.

Hard to really hear on stupid iPhone but it sounds pretty mean. Will give it a really good listen on home system. There has to be a real good reason Ed wasn't cool with it being advertised as the VH pickup? Perhaps the so called PAF rewound? And screw/slug arrangement pictured on VHI?

So the Super 70 is same as Maxon U-1000. The U-2000 is with an A5. So slip in a C8 into the U-2000.

pretty caught up on my projects but decided to do a pup swap on my b&w franky. it had a custom custom and sat for months. just never moved me tonewise. i threw a super 70s back in and holy crap. that coupled with the EP 3 pedal is money.

The Super 70 sounds like it has great mids and not too much gain or hair. Don't think we've heard clips of the SH-5 that were head turning (that I can remember).

I see there are different font engravings on the backplate, does it matter ?

interesting. Would the wire gauge's be the same ?
