Anyone tried the new Vox Handwired v846?
Just wondering if it's worth the 200 bones and if it comes close to the original.
EDIT: also, if I'm going shopping for a vintage v846, what things should I look for? I.e. is a replaced pot okay or should I skip, should it be italian or american, or anything else of the sort?
and what's the deal with the trashcan/stack of dimes?

You should get a used vox v847 on ebay then get the Area 51 drop in kit go check it out area51tubeaudio.com I have a V846 and a Thomas Crybaby the Areaa 51 Slays both of them !!!! he also makes a buffer either built in or in its own box so you can put it in front of a fuzz face easier

I thought the V847 was the reissue of the V846. Are they now making a reissue of the V846 called V846? I use a orgional V846 from 1969 and love it?

The original V 846 sounds good, I am only recommending the the Area 51 to Brandon becase you can drop it into any wah chassis and have the sound of an italian vox with the reliability that far exceeds the new stuff, real switchcraft jacks, high quality Inductor and Caps true bypass, soldered connections 100K ICAR taper pot. The old ones sound great but they belong in my Wah Museum !!!

Trash Can, Stack of Dimes, Fasel, or the Almighty Halo as long as it measures 500h it will work !!! The transistors, Capacitors, and Pot taper have the most effect on the voice of the wah !!!

That's the V848. They explained it to be a V846 with today's available material.Tone seaker wrote:I thought the V847 was the reissue of the V846. Are they now making a reissue of the V846 called V846? I use a orgional V846 from 1969 and love it?
... Great. Just what I need yet another wah... that would make 7
Ya know I'm goanna hafta' see for myself...
Heard good things on that Area51. and the buffer is a plus, but paying a few bucks more is the better option IMO.
What yladrd61 posted is it.
Mostly having a combination of the fasel type inductor and an ICAR pot.
I think the V846HW would be a good investment and would cut out all the searching. The biggest bang for the buck.
The Originals are still going up, but in most cases the pot must be changed...
Keep in mind that there are wah's for Hummers & wah's for Singles. Also wah's that function as good in the neck as it does with the bridge.
The Fuzz/Wah/Vibe equation is tricky. You could have the right formula, but getting it to sound right is an Art.
Especially with the Vibe. MANY clones fall WAY short of the "double pulse". They're mostly a glorified Phaser signal.

Re: Anyone tried the new Vox Handwired v846?
The best clone of the Italian Vox Clyde Mccoy {Jimi's Favorite} I have ever head or seen is the Ariel Wah by Art Effects in Haifa Israel they are over $200 if you can find one !!! The biggest difference between the Clyde and the V846 is the inductor and the resistor value across it the clyde has 100K and the V846 had 33k. The Area 51 is a very close 2nd and is a very good deal for a handwired (All Soldered) like the original, with good metal switchcraft jacks, the originals had plastic jacks which are very fragile, if you can find a Vintage wah in good shape and you are willing to pay a lot buy one. With the Area 51 you are getting a brand new wah built like the old ones !!!!
I also have a Thomas Organ Crybaby with a Stack of Dimes Inductor, and a Thomas International Vox V846 with the TDK 5103 Cube Inductor, the Area 51 sounds better than either one of them, put it in a Vox V847 housing and it even looks the part
