The Wolf has nothing do with this thread, I was merely responding.....no one knows for sure other than they told me that is was modeledafter the original pickup in that guitar. IS it the same pickup from VH1 probably not. The guitar took on a life of its own and I assuming the pickups did as well. I dont know, I just know what they told me and they built them so.

I find this amazing, that the pickup thats in the replica franky is very close to the duncan custom-custom?,which to me is far from his old sound, Ed used a original gibson paf from a 1961 gibson es335 guitar, the custom-custom is a mud bomb, the resistance on that pickup is to high (14k) there is no openness or highs on that pickup and it lacks clarity, that doesnt sound like the old van halen(1978).The custom custom pickup wasnt around in the early van halen days, also for duncan to design a pickup on here-say(custom custom)The BS is starting to get thicker,i have been saying this for along time, rudy leiran eds old tech used to purchase old paf for ed in the early days, rudy would buy them instead of ed because if they knew that they were for ed the would up the dollar figure on them, anyway its all about the money,i will just stick with my duncan 59 or dimarzio paf and be extremely happy,it is the old van halen sound.

Nitro & Divebomb,
I agree w/ you bt lets get something straight, I DONT POST BS on here like most do, I get my info from people who have had their hands on the goods as well as people who built the guitars so......The fact is and I have said this before, the Frankie replica is 14K, A2....I dont know what the original is but according to them, they copied the pickup for tone not so much the K factor, take it for what its worth AND I mentioned the CC becuz the readings are the same which is true. The CC is a decent VH pickup as well as the ones you mentioned agreed. All I said is the READINGS are almost the same....both are A2 and both are 14k give or take.

Marco im not saying you are posting BS im taking about the people(companys) who are assuming and making pickups, guitars amps, etc, etc that THINK they know the old van halen sound and are making money off nieve people, the pickup ed put in the original franky when he built it was a original gibson paf from a 1961 gibson es335 PEROID,all the BS ed said about rewinding it a changing magnets is BS to throw people off the same way ed though people off with his amps(marshalls). The van halen 1 sound is a paf.

You can look for a original gibson paf or save sometime and go with the duncan 59 or the dimarzio paf, just my opinion, here is a little history the person who showed ed how to pot pickups in the early days(mid 70s) was wayne charvel, the pickup ed took to wayne to have potted was dimarzio paf also gibson paf,ed complained to wayne that the pickups squeeled to much because of the volume he was playing at i think i posted this before but i wasnt sure, anyway have fun and dont believe some of these so-called van halen sound people that think they know eds old sound.

Ed used a PAF for his old sound and maybe later (Fair Warning area) changed to a CC or even a Hybrid.
So the SD '59 supposes to be faithful repreduction of a PAF.
We don't know if the original PAF ed used had a A2 or A5 magnet....
My ears tell me it's A5 BUT I've had great results with A2. It really depends on the guitar you're using...If your guitar is already bright sounding an A5 would probably be to much, am I right?
Anyway; I do think you can't go wrong with a '59 / Antiquity / Dimarzio paf / Holmes / '78 etc. etc.
What magnet to use depends on the guitar's natural sound. If the guitar's bright , take an A2, just my opinion

NITRO he meant me.......Excuse Rockstah, lately he takes me the wrong way, why I dont know....all I have ever done was applaud him for his work on Starship and ask him about amp stuff which he and Ralle snub me on sometimes.
Anyway, bad choice of words..."some". I hate it when people question you when you bring some truth to the table and then its questioned as if I am "full of it". I have no time for people like that and that was what I meant. There is a reason I frequent this board and it is exactly why Rockstah said, because there is alot of good stuff on here, I just dont like when people dont believe what I am saying. It pisses me off and I dont have time for it. That was my point.
I urge you all to find a store and try the Frankie for yourself. I think it open up some eyes and maybe give people a different prespective on the guitar itself and the pickup.
Rockstah,
Dont take offense to what I said, I just know that I have asked alot of good questions about that sound to you & Ralle and get little or no response so....I stopped asking becasue I would not get a response. Maybe I am taking it the wrong way....

Yes ... but PAFs suffured from some very poor quality control. Some are hot, some are weak, some have A2, others A3, A5, etc ... Seymour copied a PAF he thought was great.Ruben wrote:So the SD '59 supposes to be faithful repreduction of a PAF.
True ... but everything points at A2: the EVH '78, the Custom-Custom and the Frankenstein Clone pick-up. A5 is very bright while A2 isn't.Ruben wrote:We don't know if the original PAF ed used had a A2 or A5 magnet.... My ears tell me it's A5 BUT I've had great results with A2. Ed tempered w/ his PAF early on so whatever he was using had probably little left from being a true PAF.
I own a couple '78 [A2] and a Bareknukle VHII [A5] and a SD59 they all measure around 9k ... I owned a Voodoo 59 for a while ... they all do a good early VH impression.Ruben wrote:Anyway; I do think you can't go wrong with a '59 / Antiquity / Dimarzio paf / Holmes / '78 etc. etc.
The Dimarzio PAF Pro just sucked IMHO.
I have a LesPaul that is very bright, a A5 PAF in it is horrible but a A2 is actually very sweet.

Hey Beasty,
I think he meant the DiMarzio Virtual PAF, not the Pro. One is in the vintage group while the PAF PRO is in the medium output group. I put in the DiMarzio Virtual Hot PAF & Virtual Neck in my Wolf and have the EVH 78 in my Lush Strat. I do have an 8.7k A2 Highorder I am dying to get in my Strat so......I will experiment with all 3 and maybe get a Custom Custom and try that although I remember it being in my Wayne Rock Exotic Legend and it not being that great. That axe was alder and maple(top) though.
