This is my gigging amp

Post by JimmyR » Sun Feb 08, 2015 9:20 pm

I hoped some of you might be interested in my main gig amp. I built this a year or two ago, and use it in my band. We play original rockabilly, jump blues, rock'n'roll kinda stuff. It gets quite loud and dirty, believe me! I use a Gretsch 6120, some slap back delay and a great dirt box.

It's based on the Fender 5F4 circuit. But I used a "fatstack" MM power transformer, because I love the extra low end definition. I hate the tweed amp woofiness on the bass strings. This amp is plenty tough in the balls department! And using the Fatstack P/T lets me use EL34s - or rather JJ KT77s (same thing kinda sorta) - and get a big, fat tone with more mids than 6L6s can provide. It sounds like a tweed Marshall. Very warm and full.

I built it as a 1x12 combo with Celestion. The cab comes from Mojo, and it's a great job.

Sweet! I have been itching to do a Fenderish build myself lately but the work schedule keeps getting in the way. Did you do the cabinet also?

No, the cab is Mojo. I love the faux gator tolex! Reminds me of an old school satchel.

If you are coming from a Marshall background I can very much recommend using an MM Fatstack power transformer in a tweed build. You still get the Fender sound but much better low end definition. And EL34s in a tweed are awesome.
