2204 build from scratch. Help needed with transformers.

Post by theFan » Sat Jun 22, 2013 7:31 pm

Hi, i'm just starting a JCM800 2204 build and i'm looking at buying parts quick - i'm heading to the states for wedding and given that to buy the parts at home involves importing from the states i figure ill save some money and buy while im there. Anyway, i leave this afternoon so on a tight schedule!

I've got a few questions but the most important are the big items (much cheaper to ship smaller items if i don't have time to buy in the states).

TRANSFORMERS

I've decided to go with Classic Tone transformers.
OT - # 40-18025
Choke - # 40-18032

For the PT i've got the options at Classic Tone for either of these:
- # 40-18023
- # 40-18095

the second one is their upgraded PT. They say this about it:
"This also is a great upgrade power transformer since it features the highest performing and coolest running, grain oriented M-6 steel lamination, a copper flux band for hum reduction and three separate B+ rating options appropriate for a variety of solid state and tube rectification applications. This is a very versatile Marshall style power transformer for use in 50W or "so" DIY amp projects and new OEM builds."

It's 27 bucks more and i don't want to pay for anything that doesn't increase reliability or tone. What do you guys think i should get?

Thanks,
Tim

With the upgrade, you get two different voltage options. Depending on wall voltage you can get approx 420-25 on the plates or 470-75 with SS rectification. If you want only the higher voltage, the standard will fit the bill.

Thanks for the info. What might be the benefits of having the option of a lower plate voltage?

The lower voltage will get you closer to that late 70's 2204 tone, with more compression.
The higher voltage may find you running an extra resistor to drop the B+ to the power tubes in order to get it sounding as sweet.
So I like purple, okay!!!!!!

83.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot!
