where to get a flat lip head box for a 67/68 build?

Post by VintageCharlie » Tue May 22, 2012 6:55 pm

Hi guys,

i know this has been asked a lot of times, but it seems like this is a field where a lot of changes happenbed lately. Where do you get your true to vintage spec head boxes? I'd be after a 67/68 100w box with the flat lip. Who makes these for a decent price?
I can get mojo cab from TAD, but it has the round lip (were these introduced in 69 or even later?).

Thanks and best regards,

VintageCharlie

There are a good number of guys here that want these right now including me, perhaps we could get a group order together and save a little cash. I know Mojo charges abut $260 for the large head box and an extra $25 for the Metro flat lip spec, so that is getting up there in price when buying them one at a time.

A group buy is always a good idea, but in this case i'd have to pass, as i hope to get my cab from Europe (shipping from US and taxes will get the price up by a lot otherwise).

Right, Chris from ampmaker, thanks - i had forgotten about him.

Has anyone had experience with Steve M.? I intended to order a head cab from him, but i didn't get to it. He seems to be very knowledgeable and lives near the Marshall factory and knows people over there.

So that would be 2 options from UK. Anyone else maybe?

I just bought my second Mojotone Marshall-style plexi head-box- Both are full-size, but I had them leave off the top vent on one so I can make a large-box 50 watter with it. (I miss my old '74 Marshall 4-input Bass that I never should have sold)

I don't understand the whole "lip" issue; Could somebody please explain it to me?

Also, beautiful as the boxes are (I love them) they don't include the hum shield that goes under the chassis. Where can I get my hands on some of these? Thanks- co

The flat shelf or lip is period correct for 67-68 plexis, well at least that is the spec George uses on his 12 series builds(the 12series kits used to come with head cabs like this as too).

Hi. Lately I ordered a Super Lead cabinet from Chris Uff at ampmaker. I got the cabinet from customs and I have to say he is doing first rate craftsmanship. For me I just wanted a basic SLP cabinet in black levant with gold piping and large air vents, flat lip front and also a small white Marshall logo. I definitely recommend him for his work.

Here are the pics:
