Cathode lift power tube bypass?

I recently rebuild my 1987x to 1987/1986/1964 spec and I got a tip to install a cathode lift bypass to mute the powertubes while keeping the voltage high on the filter caps. I've used a progressive Carling off/standby/on switch to lift the 1R connection to ground in bypass.
This should reduce the wear on the filter caps and minimize impact on the powertubes.
I've read both positive and negative reactions about this on the Internet but also that Engl and Mesa/Boogie use cathode lifts for their bypass and/or to "pull" 2 tubes to get half wattage.
Do or don't?
