Got given a whole bag of mustards

Post by nzoomed » Thu Mar 22, 2012 5:11 am

I have been going through them and have found myself 8 of the precious 0.022uf caps @400v and 11x 0.027uf which will do me fine for a few more builds, i have also got some 0.1, 0.01, 0.033 and some 0.018 which are still useful in guitar circuits. :)

However most of the other caps are not much use in guitar, such as some 0.33 0.39 0.47 0.0027 0.0012 0.0015 0.0068 0.047 0.0047 0.082 0.0082 0.0056 0.056 etc

I also found 3 really nice metallised film capacitors made in germany branded "EROFOL II" in the values of 0.022, i get the impression they are a top quality audio cap, perhaps i should keep them for hi-fi?

Sorry, i would love to help out if i had enough, but as you can appreciate, they are extremley hard to get, and sell for ridicolus prices, the 0.027 are the best substitute for 0.022 and they do turn up on ebay from time to time, i was lucky to get just enough 0.027 for one amp build from a seller in Spain, they cost me around $30USD for the lot, which is good considering the cheapest ones (with full leads) start at $20 USD each for 0.022.
If you want any other values though, let me know, if got stacks of other values that may come in useful.
0.082 can be used in place of 0.1 in some cases.

some people use 0.033 in place of 0.022 and say they sounds better, i dont know if it would make a huge difference, they claim you get more bass. Where as other sellers on ebay are trying to flock off 0.018 and say the same thing, that it doesnt sound too bassy, and that their buyers preferred them. lol

On a side note, i have a source of SRC caps that are british made, and honestly are just as good if not better quality than the mustards (their ends dont crack and break off like some mustards do)
They are 0.027 and are an orange colour, they also came in blue and red colours, depending on the values, some people on here nickname the red ones "Ketchups" lol
Either way they are an excellent NOS alternative, and i dont see them on ebay very much at all, but are still identical construction to mustards. LEMCO made virtually identical capacitors to these too, in the same red, orange and blue colours. I think ive possibly seen green ones too, dont know what other colours they came in, but ill post some pics when i get a chance. :)

No sorry, i only have 0.33 and 0.47, again, not much use for guitar amps, may come in useful for some Hi-Fi applications.
Ive got some 0.15 but thats about as close as i have.
I do have another huge bag mainly full of used mustards, that i will sort out in the next few days, will let you know if i find any.

Don't be so sure about that.

Don't forget there are other amps such as Marshall and the 50/100watters.
Then there's the 18watt marshall for a start (that's the .047's and the .0047's spoken for, and the .0082's would probably suffice for the .01's). In fact, if I could afford another set of transformers and a chassis, I would find that hoard the perfect excuse to build another 18watt platform (great amps! )

You've got stuff of more value than you think. You just need to look in the right places for the right buyers.
So I like purple, okay!!!!!!

83.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot!

Thanks for that info, yes your right about the 0.047's etc, i see they were used in the vintage marshalls after going through some schematics, i will be keen to build an 18w someday.
At the moment im working on a single ended 12w platform using a single EL34 for the output stage and an ECC82 for the driver stage and a single ECC83 for the preamp stage, its got quite a unique tone circuit where its located between V1a and V1b.

If i decide to get rid of any of my mustards i will go through them and create an inventory and give people here first option instead of putting them on Ebay, ive got a big bag of 0.0082 caps, but alot have the ends cracking off them which ive seen happen with some batches for whatever reason.
