JTM45 Offset Project - Which tag board to use? RayD v BrianH

Post by page361 » Fri Mar 16, 2012 1:00 am

Greetings all! I'm in the process of building a killer JTM45 (sandwich cab/coffin logo) using Steve Marshall's '63 offset chassis, black knobs, M****n RS OT, Marstran PT, Phiers, AB's, mustards, RS repro caps, Bulgin fuse holder & power socket, PFTE wire...you get the picture...anyway I can't decide which board to use...RayD's red fiberglass board or BrianH's brown phenolic board...Please let me know what ya think!

Ray's looks nice too but I've used Brians and been very happy. Probably can't go wrong with either one.

Thanks for the feedback! I've been leaning toward Brian's as well...

Offset boards were 7 holes wide not 8 :hide:

There are some issues regarding these amps.

Some say that the first JTM45s were midcab mounted but did not sit on the handle right - were lopsided so the offsets were introduced for a short time.
The first offsets were polished front panel, narrow input jack spacing, seven hole boards, carbon comp resistors wrapped around turrets and the paper RS type caps. The OTs were RS Deluxes and the PTs a particular RS type with thin stacks and self lead heaters twisted tight. These were followed by the white front panel wider spaced amps with flange mounts 8-hole boards, mainly Piher resistors. Same RS Deluxe OT but the second type of RS OT with solder lugs and 220/240/250v selector on top of the bell housing.
How many of these amps are true originals, repaired originals, lash ups or fakes I do not know and I do not know who really does any more. This one

http://vintageamps.com/plexiboard/viewt ... 5&start=75
is very similar to the one you show, compare with this silver block logo here http://www.amparchives.com/album/Marsha ... ircuit.jpg.
Same black white heater wire over the sockets (other offsets seem to have them along the chassis, some have the 'bell' twin wire with no twists) the output valve sockets are sitting on top of the chassis rather than with flanges inside. Both have seriously cleaned and polished chassis with signs of OT bolts having been removed/replaced.
Here is one believed to be of original spec:

If anyone knows please advise! That includes you Mr Alnico and Mr Marshallhead, pretty please!!
