Wire lacing tutorial

Post by BrianH » Thu May 07, 2009 10:14 pm

Been asked a bunch of times to show I how lace my wire bundles like the old Marshalls, Hiwatts, etc. Here's how I do it which I think is vintage correct.

Get some lacing cord or even some thin, stripped wire insulation. I'm using old stock RS lacing.

Bundle of wires to be laced:
http://kurtsequipment.com/lacing1.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Wrap one end as you see fit. I like to tie a knot, wrap around the bundle a few times, then pull the lead through one of the loops:
http://kurtsequipment.com/lacing2.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Pull the lead wire to where you want the first knot, and loop the lead under the bundle from the right side:
http://kurtsequipment.com/lacing3.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Grab the lead on top of the wires and twist clockwise to make a loop as shown:
http://kurtsequipment.com/lacing4.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Take the lead wire and feed through the loop:
http://kurtsequipment.com/lacing5.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Pull the lead away from you to make a knot, then pull the lead straight up in the air, then back + forth from L to R to cinch the knot super tight:
http://kurtsequipment.com/lacing6.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://kurtsequipment.com/lacing7.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://kurtsequipment.com/lacing8.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://kurtsequipment.com/lacing9.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Pics for knot #2:
http://kurtsequipment.com/lacing10.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://kurtsequipment.com/lacing11.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://kurtsequipment.com/lacing12.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://kurtsequipment.com/lacing13.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://kurtsequipment.com/lacing14.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://kurtsequipment.com/lacing15.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://kurtsequipment.com/lacing16.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://kurtsequipment.com/lacing17.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://kurtsequipment.com/lacing18.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and continue to the end of the bundle! Do it a few times and you'll get the idea.

Awesome post, Brian! Always cool to see how people do stuff!

On another note, I went to your custom board site. Can you cut that perf board to any size? I need something custom and if you can cut that board to any size, I'd be interested in buying some from you. I don't need the turrets staked, just empty perf board... Lemme know here or via PM.

Thanks,

Steve

Hey Steve, I'm limited to 3 1/8" by 11 7/8" at the moment or smaller. If you need smaller, no problem. Bigger I can't do yet as I order either precut or close to precut.

What size were you looking for?

thanks
Brian

Brian is making one for me that's about 15". You just need to send him the material you want.

22" :shock: That's a big board!

Wish I could help Steve, but all I have is much smaller than that right now. Sending me the material is an option. I've had people do this before with other colors, etc..., as S.Marshall is doing now :wink:

Cool - where did you get the perf board from? I already have un-perforated board...

I think I'm being sent un-perf'd material, Steve. I can make into perf board or whatever you'd like.

Yup, I'm sending un-perfed material. I didn't want the fully perfed look for this one. Just staked to my specs.

Back on the lacing topic... Anyone know where I can get some of this type of lacing material? I would like to use it in the new JTM45 I've just started building.

Sorry, no lead on the source. I have some old stock stuff

Steve,

Just wanted to let you know I now have material in stock to do any size board... JTM45, JTM45/100 main and cap boards, superlead, etc. It is terrific-looking, domestically made material that is slightly lighter in color than my red material (which is almost gone).

thanks!
Brian
