Thanks for the kind words! It's great to hear other positive remarks about modern tubes. So far I do like the Shugs. Maybe a tab more flab in the low end compared to the Gold Lions but not enough to be upset about.

As far as pre's, you're going to get a different opinion from everybody!
JTM-45's are bass heavy, and can flub like you mentioned in your last comment.
I've enjoyed a Bugle Boy in V1, a Tungstrum in V2, and a strong Syl in V3.
Out of curiosity, what was the price of the M**ren OT? Checked his site and I don't see any pricing.

2 bills for each the OT and the PT. The choke was $15. He charge very reasonable shipping prices from San Diego.

I think I found the wood for the front panel. Piece of curly cherry... the figure is intense. This piece is a little on the light side, so I've taken a recommendation from my hardwood guy to ever so slightly die the wood a bit more reddish brown. We'll see how that goes!
In the mean time, I've got the cabinet all glued up and just about ready to rout the edges.

Awesome! Sandy was a rough one, but luckily not as bad as Irene here. I also had a paid of Gold Lions drift, like 10mA. I seem to have a stable pair now and IMO, sound much more brown than the Shuguangs. Night and day difference to my ear, and what I was looking for.

Glad you saw the posts Brian! Boards are awesome... hopefully the pics do them justice. Great dark brown color too! Doug is a great tube guy... I've talked to him and am sending him the drifting tube. I've checked the tube several times and its still 14-15 mA off, but for that 1 hour before they drifted they were awesome. Can't wait to get another one in there. As soon as the headcab is done, I'll do some A-B clips between the Lions and the Shugs.

Re: New JTM45'ish Born - Building the headcab...
Finally got around to finished the plywood encasement last night. I've got to go to a woodshop to borrow a jointer to ready the curly cherry board for the table saw, so hopefully things will pick up pace. So far so good though...
First the sides are router to ensure the profile looks right when finished... Then the top, sides, and bottom to make the right corners and flat lips...

Very nice, including the woodwork!
Personally I find the Mustard, Piher combination great. I prefer Mullard pres and have GECs in my 45 and 45/100 which sounds pretty good to me, fortunately still have a pair to spare for my 'sandwich front' clone with RS OT.
I was very impressed by the Gold Lions I installed in a 45/100 and they did not drift in the few hours I 'soaked' it. ,

Okay, it's been a bit hectic. Finally had some time here and there to make a little progress. Got the internal lip pieces built in the box and finished the rough of the front panel.
Also got some new Gold Lions back from Doug. He just swapped me another pair.
Figure looks pretty cool. Here's some pics...

Thanks! I really thought about flame. But I actually don't have a band saw so book-matching would have been difficult for me. Would look awesome though!

Ha! thanks axeman! I'm not quite ready for production mode but I'd be glad to make cabs. My problem is timeline at this point. I don't have all of the tools needed for prepping rough cut wood so I have to make trips to the local community center. Id love to make custom cabs though!

Had a little time today to finish the front panel and begin the back panel (just birch, not the cherry). Everything dry fit looks good so far, so time to glue and screw!
