well I got the super resistors last week. I"m going to wire up v1 on a switch between it and the takman plate and try and make some kind of ab recording just for the heck of it

Got most of what I need in the Riken's, but I'm waiting on my new board before I get started. Might wait for the OT too and install that before I think about fitting the board.

Downside of using Rikens - I can't find any 2W 10K's anywhere in the world.

So I ordered some of the AMRG's for the 2W 10K positions, and the leads are real short. Certainly nowhere near long enough to go right across the board. :(

Wonder what other obstacles I'm gonna hit along the way :?:

you could try kiwami's for your 2w slots, dopn't know about the leads though.

so I'm playing around with a switch on the back and different plate resistors for V1, which has a shared cathode , 820/330 with a CC r

I had a 1w takmon against a .7w amrd whatever it is. I was a little surprised that I could tell the difference more than I thought I would, of course my mind nmay be playing tricks on me. I haven;'t measureed these, I will, but they are both uber HQ exotic bowteek so they should be within 2% of each other I'd guess.

For kicks I hooked up a 100k piher PCB pull from my old channel switching jcm800. OMFG, I can't believe the difference it makes. This is one change I'd bet money I could pick out blind folded. Maybe I;d lose the cash lol, but it really seems that way. The combination of crispness, fullness and sizzle really put the wow on me. I'm gonna keep ab'ing stuff, I want to hook up a dirt cheap CF and see it fairs.

here's a crappy clip, the usual low volume, half baked VH licks, excuse the poor playing, panama is my new "pet" song and I haven't really learned it yet.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxXqV4nrFqU" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There are two clips back to back, both clips contain a piher plate resistor, the first clip has a takman, the second clip a amtrans. I measured them, the takman is 101+ and the others are 98. something.

You can see me switch the plate over whem I reach behind the amp. Jury's still out on whether any of these rival or exceed the piher, I'm still testing.

FWIW The takman and piher have been played, the amtrans only has a couple hours on it tops.

So, I guess see if you can guess which one is which :)

Kiwame's are nice sounding and have reasonable length leads. They are actually Koa Speer SPR2 (2W) and SPR5 (5W), available from Mouser, which can save a small fortune.

I've used them a lot and like them for carbon resistors. The Beyschlags are still my favourite for Marshall builds though.

Thanks for the input guys.
And thanks to Doug for going through this trouble.
I'll have to listen on something else though, these tiny speakers aren't telling me a great deal.

BTW a good way to tell if the resistor has a magnetic body or leads is to see whether or not they stick to your guitars pickups, if the roll right off, they are non-magnetic.[/quote]

"magnetic" and "non-magnetic"-- is this a concern for guitar amps joey?

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread, but I'm about to roll some resistors here. Looking at the Takmans, they seem to have a good reputation and a good price-performance ratio. Your youtube video is no longer up. What did you think about the Amtrans? Wondering if it's worth to get a few of these just for the plates.

I built a JTM 45/100 with the Takman CF, and I love it so much I'm going to use them to build a 40w Princeton out of my Fender HotRod DLX. I haven't A/B'd them with any other though.

For which? The Takman CF 1/2w are .75 USD each where I get them from. 1/4w .45 USD.
