Keystone vs Metro turrets

Post by Billy Batz » Mon Apr 18, 2005 8:44 am

Ive always used the keystone turrets but Im looking at Metro board shots lately and is it just me or are the hole diameters of the metro turrets larger then the keystone? I like having the two 'levels' on the keystone to solder around the shaft of it but if I can fit more then 3 leads in the Metro Ill use those from now on. Theres a few connections with the keystones that I have to ream them out a little bit to fit everything. Like the PI tail were all the resistors meet and even then its a bit shady.

I think there is much more room inside the Metro turrets than even the double Keystones. I have some extras of each that I would take a pic of for you, but they're at home........lotta good they're doing you there.......

Hmmm.... Considering it costs me about $30 to do an amp with KS doubles and $10 if I were to do the same amp with Metros it sounds like I have a few good reasons to use Metros.

The only thing that sucks is that I really like the vintage brown board, but George has said that his metro turrets don't stake well in the brown so you have to use the red swirl (basically fiberglass) or the G10 epoxy.

Your right. That does suck because I did intend to start using the brown board. Dammit. The red is cool and all and Ive always used the green but I likes me da brown. Oh well Im not that concerned with looks.

Hey guys, you're in luck. I changed a while back from staking the terminals to pressing them. They work great with the brown board now.

The ID is much larger than the double Keystones. I'll take a measurement and post it later.

What do those of us who build custom boards for our amp projects use to press them in?
I'd been using a centerpunch and mallet on the Keystones.
Would a rivet nail put through from the top with the rivet gun on the back side work, give it just enough pull to expand the turret slightly?

Hoffmans site says to use a drill press with a flatened bolt in the drill. Just press it down. I dont have a drill press though. Id be using the mallet technique.

I wonder if you could use a big C clamp.

It doesn't really take that much. I turned out a tool on the lathe and them found a Torx bit that fits perfectly. You could use a driver handle with the torx bit to drive them in.

The key is getting the hole size right.
3mm.
