Panama Solo Fast Lick. Suggestions?

Post by jculb69 » Fri Feb 05, 2016 5:12 pm

I've found this lick in the solo for Panama hard to play to speed. I'm wondering if anyone has any picking pattern/phrasing suggestions. He plays a similar lick in Romeo's Delight and at the end of the solo for When it's Love. Below is the way I'm picking it.

d=downstroke
u=upstroke
h=hammer
p=pull-off

---------------------------------u7-------------------------u7----------------------------
-----d7h10p7------d7h10p7------u10P7------d7h10p7-----u10p7------d7-----------------7---
-d9-------------d9--------------------------u9-------------------------u9------u10p9p7p9------7-

Maybe this will help:

------------------H----P------------H----P-------------P----P-----------H----P------------P-----------------P----P---------------------
E------------------------------------------------7------------------------------------7-----------------------------------------------------
B----------7---7---10---7-------7---10---7--------10---7---0-------7---10---7-------10---7-------7----------------------7-----------
G---9------------------------9-------------------------------------9-------------------------------9-------10---9---7---9--------7-------
D--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----D-----D---U------------U---D--------------D---U------------U---D-------------D---U-------U---D---U-------------D---D---U-----

Good luck!

Thanks! I'll give it a try. I'd missed that double 7-7 near the beginning, but you can hear it when slowed down.

I know he probably picks it the way the tab says. However I have seen him tap it at least a couple times. It's like the last lick in the solo to Romeo Delight. Every YT clip I've seen he taps it. I was thinking about this same thing last week and started looking into it. I got caught up on the RD lick and didn't make it to the Panama one. Even though it's Panama that got me started thinking. Unfortunately since he started playing RD in 2007 the doesn't play that lick in the solo. So we've lost that oppurtunity to see how he does it. Maybe he tapped both in the studio? He does play things differently live sometimes. Panama is a tough lick to pick at speed. I fake my way through by almost sweep picking e to b string into the pull off and hammering onto the g string.

wjamflan has this TAB'ed correctly. No need to look any further to see exactly how Eddie played this part on the 1984 album. There is no need to see anything else other than what wjamflan has posted above. It is 100%, absolutely, positively correct.

If it is still hazy, check out my thread here, which I completely got from wjamflan:

Interesting that the high e string is played with a downstroke. I've been playing it with an upstroke. I'll try it when I get home I've tried slowing down videos to his picking on this, but they are either too fuzzy or too fast. Thanks for the info and thread below!!!

You are welcome...no need to struggle with videos or any other transcriptions, wjamflan has done all the work for you! Just play it as he has it TAB'ed and you will be playing it exactly like Eddie is playing it on the record!
