Improvised Sunset Sound Chamber Recording

Post by YMI5150? » Sun Nov 11, 2012 5:55 pm

I've been tripping out lately on how open Ed's guitar is on the first record. not simply dry closed mic'd but more live sounding. I have a Hardwire reverb pedal that is superb for the money but it doesnt allow for two independent channel settings (even though they call it stereo reverb...) i was going to get a second pedal to open up the left side but yesterday i started noodling with the wet cabinet location. the idea is to allow some of that heavy right side reverb to leak over to the left channel without having to rely on software.

The cab on the left has heavy reverb. it fires at the dry mic and it took a few hours to get it all set close.

take a listen. amp is my plexi (90VAC) slaved, with channels jumped and normal volume on 4, bass on 6, all else dimed. the model A with DSD, all tone electronics removed. Just DSD wide open. FYLT is too hot with the channels jumped on this recording but YRGM, RWTD, and On Fire are smokin. i tried to do a second recording with just bright channel dimed and my laptop took a dump. its perfect for that song, and the others that arent over the top sizzle. more data to suggest it was just a great plexi and a DSD or equivalent. no pedals although I suppose and EP3 would be similar in adding heat that the jumped channel adds.

dry cab driver is a blackback. wet cab speaker mic'd is a V30 (brighter like a 120).

I really like the way it gives such a live feeling.

How loud was it? Is the wet cab louder to allow for bleed? Is the wet cab reamped? I'm a little confused on the set up.

Probably a reason for me to wire up my second cab.

First off, make sure y'all listen a headphones on.

Roger, not too loud. Maybe afternoon level. Probably wouldn't get away with it later at night. Not sure which was louder since I dialed everything in with headphones.

The rig runs one output through a hot plate line out for the load. The other output runs through a home made line out box. The line out goes right into the power amp. The line out from the hot plate gets reverb on the way to the power amp. I can dial in the level of each channel to the cabs to get the right amount of bleed.
I don't hear echo on the first record. I hear space.

I just need to dial in exact sizzle and I can EQ by changing mic placement. Would be great for those of us who want the tone and have to run through PA.

Cheers Steph et al.

Love the sound of that final G chord. You can tell it's packing a punch :D Your rig is sounding like it's somewhere between late 70's Club Days and VH1

I think efraser has said it correctly...somewhere between club days and the first album. The reverb dominates on the Van Halen album and is a bit louder than you have it here. And there is indeed delay on alot of the album tracks like "Eruption" and obviously "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and others, but I do think you have achieved a happy medium between the club days and the album tones. Nice work! It is inspiring me to keep working at my own wet/dry setup that I have started tinkering with...

What is your opinion on the Hardwire pedal? Is it the Supernatural? I'm thinking of getting that to run for my wet/dry rig...I just got a Bray LO-1 box to use my Super Reverb for the wet amp with my Marshall Mod5 and lots of people seem to like the Hardwire Supernatural...

Giving my ears a chance to reaclimate, you're right. Also interesting the difference earbuds vs real studio headphones makes on the EQ.
This is the RV-7 pedal. They have the exact same features so I'm not sure what the differences are. It's a great pedal. The only thing I wish it did was isolate the pure wet signal. Seems like it should do that with stereo outputs. A nice balance knob to move some or all to one side would be the perfect solution.
I'll refine with more verb and repost.

Hmmm...that makes me wonder what exactly are the differences between the Supernatural and the RV-7 if any?! To my knowledge, I thought the Supernatural has a wet only option...that would seem to be the whole point when using a wet/dry setup with two amps and a line out box like my Bray LO-1. I searched for the differences, but no luck so far...

Here is somebody that achieved a great sound (IMHO) with this type of setup and great hands...Chelsea Constable:

It seems that we have the talent here to tweak these pedals to do this. Should be a trim pot away...

I really like your clip and you are definitely right and on to something about Ed's drier panned tone - it does have more of a room factor going.

and that VH recorded tone is so much about space and not so much echo -- real majestic quality.

after months ( no make that years !!) of screwing around with a home recorded tracks totally dry panned right and another track reverb left

it always lacks the total tonal vh contrast - almost like going from one extreme to the other - sounds like vh... but still off.

so after you posted your thoughts - I tried a mic'd clip - and added some room reverb and then tried the other wet.

( for those of you looking for a real good Plate Reverb program for recording - KarmaFX delay / eq / reverb bundle
it is a free download - they have 4 Plate settings - use Plate Warm )

I know you may be going for more of a VH live tone but, your insight really help me with a cool clip that finally sounds
VH1 but, balanced and closer to album verb.

here is clip --- if anyone is interested

great post, great insight and great amp tone you have there !

TJ,

Sounds good. I had the headphones on with the reverb in my good ear and thought it was way too much. Then I switched the headphones around to have the dry tone in the good ear and barely perceptible and that is the trick. The reverb needs to be not over bearing.

Nicely done and good playing!!

yeah you are right Roger....i'm still off .. but, can you notice the more ear pleasing contrast vs. a totally dry then totally wet mix.

Finding that absolute balance is a real bitch , you almost have to burn a clip - go play it in your car and go back to the drawing board :palm:

the science of the brown sound -- never ending .....oh well ....you guy's are all caught in the tone trap too !! hahaha
