Pictures from Whiskey Gig pre VH1
I just confirmed with the person who took these pictures (I work with his wife) that they were before the first album was released. You can see the Franky striped up and the Destroyer before it was destroyed.
In seeing pictures of Ed tinkering and pulling apart his guitar before a huge stadium gig, I have no problem considering that different tracks on VH1 have different pickups (other than using different guitars).
As an aside, VH actually used this photo in a video they posted not too long ago.

I tried to tell you guys i was there
and as you now have photo evidence maybe you will believe me that EVH used the striped strat before the record was made with a PAF in it. and i also strongly beleive he swapped pu's during the recording, some tracks DSD with strat and some PAF(sh5?) with strat

Just to complicate things, this show was before the album was released. Not sure if it was before the album was recorded. Could be in between the two.

The other thing that dates this early is the rusted bomb. It doesn't get painted black until they start touring.

Im pretty sure those pics are from late `77 when they were playing the Pasadena Civic but who knows. Just Google images Van Halen 1977 and the pics are there and have been for a while

Well, they have been there for a little over two years. I had the originals in my hand. You know, once some one posts them on line they take on a life of their own.hammered wrote:Im pretty sure those pics are from late `77 when they were playing the Pasadena Civic but who knows. Now what's so funny?
Eddie V played that righteous black/white guitar on Dec 31, 1977, for sure.
Band recorded VH1 on January 1, 1978. One day recording, they were known for working quick, just like the Beatles at EMI in 1963 (which was on/near New Years, come to think of it?). Anyway, quick recording, Dave couldn't stay indoors in the studio all day, had to work on his tan.
Two days later, January 3, a naive Ed played a mix of You Really Got Me for the guys in Angel.
Though slated for May release (in time for senior proms), Warner Brothers found out that Angel was rush releasing You Really Got Me and they brought in 3-shifts (24 hour) work crews to get Van Halen out to the masses....in February.
It could've happened, y'know.

Re: Pictures from Whiskey Gig pre VH1
I was laughing at something else as I have no problems with the rumors of which guitar he used on VH1. I can try to post a boot from June of 77 at the whiskey to see how Ed sounds there vs the 12/31/77 gig , give me a few hrs
