Here we go again...Boss GE10 :)

Post by Ruben » Thu Oct 04, 2012 9:55 am

This is actually my third Boss GE10 and by now I finally know how to use it and where to put it in the fx chain. :palm:

Goes like this: Les Paul -> 70's Script Phase 90 -> EP+ -> Strymon El Capistan -> Boss GE10 -> 68 SL

All I can say is: wow. Harmonics just jump out of the amp. No need to dime the amp.
More than enough gain when boosting the amp with the EP+ and GE10

The thing is: listening to Ed's early recordings it sound like the guitar is always on the edge of being out of control, feedback if you will. Very edgy. The GE10 definitely adds that sponginess and 'on the edge of total meltdown' to it. When rolling back the volume on your guitar the sound is clean. Full open it's like the WACF sound (my favourite).

Like to add the GE10 is super clean. Not like the awful noise of the MXR 6 bands.

A keeper this time!

Interesting  I never would have figured it that late in the chain. Which would mean your GE-10 is getting a very "effected" signal? Ruben, when you say no need to dime you mean that you're not even attenuating? Where is the volume (gain) set at?

No attenuating needed to get enough gain going on.

Gain on my SL is set at 2/3

Didn't EVH also use the GE10 AFTER his delay?

It was suppose to be for signal loss with long cords BUT it does add good things. The GE-10 is obviously different than the MXR not only in the hiss department but also the ability to boost different frequencies. Just shows there are multiple ways of getting that great tone!!

So, now lets hear some clips. :listen:

Strymon delay in the front of the amp???? Is this working fine?? My delay gets really muddy in the front... maybe I need less gain on the amp and more pedal boost :what:
76' JMP 50w w/ 71' metro board
93' Fernandes SSS strat
93' Fender Japan HSS Strat

Strymon delay in front works great. Better than my old Memory man de Luxe

I've always used my GE-10 last. To me it is the most logical place to put it.

i've said it a thousand times, sorry, (what's one more?) that the delay doesn't work in front of a cranked plexi - too much garbage with the dry and delay signal cutting eachother up in the pre amp section of a cranked amp - THIS CHAIN in this clip eliminates that problem - the amp isn't cranked, the delay remains in tact without the garbage distortion caused by a cranked pre amp section.

as simple as this idea is - i've never tried it - got to try it out cuz that clip sounds pretty killer on my laptop spkrs - assuming it will be the same in headphones...

LOVE the GE-10 but stopped using it...because it's yet another piece of vintage gear I was too paranoid about Fing up, losing, etc. and didn't want to get too attached to it. Possibly stupid, but I also don't play guitars than can't get dings in them for the same reason. Maybe it's just me....

I am similar except MXR 6 band (sometimes on sometimes not) into echoplex with one repeat. with the one slap repeat it doesn't seem to get too messy, justs fattens up the sound.
