This is the tone that I have always been chasing.
That's the Pasadena Civic stuff, It does sound great. Sounds like a 12000 series being driven by EQ mxr/GE just not over the top drive, perhaps a guitar with a true paf? not a DSD
That's right, it is from the Nightmare Before Halloween. More likely an MXR giving just a little goose but anyway, killer tone.

To me, it has that "tennis racket' feel that Rob mentioned.

Tough to tell, but I don't see any lights on on that head in Farm Aid either. Find it hard to imagine that Ed would pull all that stuff hither and yon just to throw future tone lunatics off the scent. Rob, I'm assuming a key part of the recipe is those stiffer tubes?

GoodGuest - what I hear you saying is, these other tones that we have heard and loved as great VH tones are getting there by ADDING certain high end elements BUT let's go the opposite direction and SUBTRACT the low end and thereby getting a high end boost RELATIVE to the low end which has been almost stripped away completely in order to get us a VERY FAST bounce - no slosh - lightning fast touch response that is TIGHT.

We often equate TIGHT with HARD TO PLAY. Because you end up feeling like each note is like pulling a train through a ... through a ... through something lots smaller than a train. But that's because you haven't DUMPED all that sloggy low end off first. I have this feeling that you are on the right track with that.

Dump the low end as soon as possible - we may even be talking about a pickup that has very small low end response so that from the very very start we are TRAVELING LIGHT!
Well I was playing a triple rec the other day and dialed in a nice vh tone and noticed the tightness but of course the gain is way to much for old EVH....but that tightness got me thinking along with this thread....knowing how they derive this tightness in a high gain amp..it follows that EVH's are chopped off right from the start and he gets his lows from his 12 series and cab...

I think his highs are from his pickup ,guitar, strings , amp ...he relys on his guitar for his core mids and highs...you can hear it without even plugging his guitar in to an amp , just have to handle one of his signature guitars for a while and you notice it... his core highs and mids are his guitar....how he cuts those lows and boosts the mids and highs is the big secret ... and it's not the pickup only, something else ....but I look at all his signature amps they all chop off the lows right off the bat and let his natural highs thru...but they are high gain amps so they slowly replace the lows ..

A plexi isn't a hi gain amp so to get that drive and lows back he pretty well has to turn up all dials to 10...As we heard in the Letterman clip there is no way he has his volume on 10 running thru 4 speakers unless he has his power cut drastically or has some tubes pulled???? or soaking up the heat somewhere...and performing major eq ing for feedback...A magic box tho would be so so much easier , be it a custom 6 band or whatever ..something to reduce the lows add harmonics to the tone and boost the output and drive the plexi good..a Boss ge10 would be able to do that?

Actually in an old thread where I rigged up the first 2 stages (1 tube) of a CH. 2 of an 5150II operating at 240vdc ..it hits you square ...NO LOWS but that voodoo queen type of tone is there also, screaming add more oomph..  That single tube (2 triodes) circuit cuts the lows perfectly actually coming to think about it...maybe we should all be changing the first coupling cap in the plexi too 750pf instead of .0022 for starters and see what happens... :hairband:

That would do it for sure...let all the highs thru and cut major lows ..in a 12 series with the 820 ohm and.68 cathode I bet that would be one rewarding experiment...tight city! :shred: :shred: :shred: Now I'm wondering if that would affect the output power of the amp, not having all that super low end and sub harmonics to amplify..we need C### in here now to answer that question....I know transformers and frequency, impedance and power are all inter related.... :help:

What would 750pf be? .00075?

It's the TymPanic MemBrain Effect...

ok - i looked it up - yes - so i could just try a 620pf i have on there to see what that leads to.

i remember seeing info online WAY BACK. and somebody said something about ed using a very small cap at v1 - and i remember discounting it as a typo - thinking someone MEANT uf and accidentally wrote pf.

will be fun to try. haven't had my amps open in years. i'll be listening for the TymPanic MemBrain Effect. mwoooohhh haaa haaa!!

Yeah a .001uf is a 1000 pf....so a 750 pf would be .00075uf(which isn't recognized as a printed value)......Actually a .001 uf might be a better choice to play with.

Rob, open that bad boy up!!!

I always go back to this chart because I can never keep the 2n2 versus .0022 stuff straight.
