My favorite place to sit and play is on the crapper, I'd do it live too if I wasn't so modest.
I guess that was why Steve Hackett sat for most of early Genesis...IBS!

Here's a little video demo I made with my iPhone and my unplugged '68 strat to demo the last fingerings I posted for the "Ice Cream Man" lick...which is essentially identical to how wjamflan and Tone Slinger are playing it. Believe it or not, this is technically the first demo video I have ever made, at least it is the first I've ever made where I'm on camera:)

I know there's one thing that everyone loves and that is the tone of an unplugged electric guitar on an iPhone! Take that amp builders

Thanks Andy and stef:) Just picked up the guitar with no warm-up at all and played it twice...of course after I made the clip I played it a bunch of times and was really gettin' it:) This was the first time I've ever used the camera feature on my iPhone! It would be nice if I had a nice HD CamCorder hooked up to a proper mic and my amp blazing away, but this works just as well to demo the lick.

I actually saw a guy that did a "lesson" video and, though he missed alot of the notes, he sort've had some of it right. I would almost swear that he read this thread...at least he didn't tap the lick!

Here is another quick demo of the "Ice Cream Man" lick...this time with the isolated guitar track playing in the background. I made two passes, neither of which is perfect, but in my opinion, this demonstrates the TAB that I posted earlier within the context of the guitar track.

Andy and Bill, you know I think you are right...but if anybody has any other ideas and can demonstrate it as I have with a clip and TAB as I have written it with specific left hand fingering and right hand pick directions shown, I'm willing to entertain any other ideas.

That said, I think we have this ICM lick licked! :champ:

Roger that is a great way to look at it...the back and forth and trying a lick this way and that along with an open mind lead to real understanding of the music. And the whole enterprise led by the "How'd he do that?!" mindset that you speak of...very cool thread for everyone!

Here is a TAB I made that shows exactly how the "I'm The One" lick in D that Roger is talking about is the same pattern as the "Ice Cream Man" lick from the Van Halen LP as Bill has notated in TAB and demonstrated in his last clip. The TAB on top is a segment of the solo from the live recording of "I'm The One" from Ipswich. I chose to start notating it beginning with the unison bends (at approximately the 1 minute and 30 second mark in the YouTube clip) so we have some context for where the riff lies in the "ITO" Ipswich recording. Then on the bottom TAB I have notated where the "Ice Cream Man" lick from the LP falls in line with the same pattern in D matching the "ITO" TAB above it.

I can make another video clip where I play along with the Ipswich recording playing in the background (as I did with the "Ice Cream Man" lick clip I posted above) if that will help illustrate the point, but I think Bill's earlier clip of the "ITO" lick pretty much gets the idea across.

I ran out of room on the page to finish the last couple of notes of the "I'm The One" solo from Ipswich so I continued it on the "ICM" lick TAB line directly underneath...after this little "hammer on and tremolo bar dip" followed by the bend with vibrato at the 13th fret of the B string, Ed then goes into the little riff in G which is then repeated at the 5th position to get him back to A at the 5th position and into the verse again.

Well, I know that several others hear it this way and have argued their case but I have slowed it down and listened to it hundreds of times and I only hear 6 notes in the repeat section. I don't hear that extra pull off note on the E string.

E 10-13-14-10-10-
B---------------------14

I actually hear it phrased more like this

E 13-14-10---10----10-
B -----------------14---

At times, I feel like I am in room 12A but I just don't hear 7 notes in there. But if you like playing it that way, have fun. Either way, they are killer Ed licks.
Maybe you could make a clip like I did for the "Ice Cream Man" lick where you play on top of the Ipswich track...I'll make a clip of me playing right on top of the Ipswich recording and we can see how our fingerings sound that way...it would be a great way to compare results. I think my last clip of me playing on top of the "Ice Cream Man" track pretty much proved that fingering to be correct and I think we should be able to put this to rest with a similar clip from both of us. I agree that these are killer licks-I just think it is pretty obvious that they are actually the same killer lick! :)

I thought Bill's clip where he played the "I'm The One" live lick proved it for me, but if we play right on top of the track, there should be no room for doubt...

I'm away from my guitars until next Tuesday, but I'll make a new clip then...Do you have an iPhone or a similar smartphone with a camera? My iPhone seemed to work well and easily for me for this purpose...

OK...here is a clip I made of me playing the lick in D from "I'm The One" at Ipswich as I and Bill have it TAB'ed.

Anyone else want to make a clip demonstrating their fingering? Ahem...rgorke? JimiJames?
