my overall feel is that there just seems to be a controlled quality to it that makes me think synthetic, not b/c it sounds bad but b/c it's almost too "nice."

all that said - i have no idea and i'm really curious as to what it is because it does sound good.
You are right, that's how I feel it sounds too.

My chain was this

SD Custom Custom > Line 6 Toneport (interface) > Reaper > GR5 with Jump Plexi head, all knobs dimed even bass, variac to 90v, turn the sag up, bias all the way up > delete the GR5 cabinet, add Plate reverb in GR5, LeCab2 (allows you to use impulses/cabs) I found a bunch of GuitarHack JJPowertube V30's + Greenback impulses, I tried to greenbacks but it's way too controlled, so I used V30's dead centre on the cone.

I think the thing that's making is sound so tame is me sucking at doing plate reverb, check this guy out, his sounds so alive, his chain is the same as mine basically.

I knew that this was a modeler, but thanks to the impulses it sounds quite convincing. Nice chops ;)

I hope I'm not the only one that isn't familiar with the above, but I'll ask anyway...

1. How do you use the Line 6 Toneport? What is its function?

2. What is the Reaper, and what does it do?

3. Did you mean Roland GR 55 guitar synthesizer? Something else? It is a modeler, correct?

Hey jamflan, I'm sorry I'll expand

A Line6 Toneport is a low latency audio interface that I can plug my guitar into to record directly to the PC without needing to mic anything.

Reaper is audio software to record all my playing into, alternatively you can use Audacity which is free.

Guitar Rig 5 (GR5) is an amplifier modelling software, so it tries to emulate all the most famous amplifiers/cabinets/pedals/microphones A lot of people hate them and think they sound fake, but I quite like them, especially for practicing since you can get decent tone at real low volume.

I hope that helps

My question is what does the term impulse mean? I'm looking at the lecab2 VST.
Interpretation?! I thought I was playing it right!

From the RedWirez site (the makers of the impulses I use)

What's an impulse response?

"What's an impulse response?", you ask. Only your key to unleashing killer guitar tones at any volume. Finally, you can give the neighbors some other reason to call the cops.

For the technical among us, an impulse response (or "IR") realistically captures the characteristics, both in frequency and time, of an entire signal chain, including the sampled speaker, the microphone, the room it's in, the power amp, preamp -- even the A/D converters. Put another way, it'll capture the unique frequency curve of the speaker, any phase smearing inherent in the mechanical operation of the speaker, any cabinet resonance, the frequency response and resonance of the mic, the sound of the room, and any frequency or phase related coloration introduced by the power amp, preamp, and converters and apply that captured sound to any audio you pass through it... or so our even geekier friends tell us.

How do I use an impulse response?

Basically, you load one of our impulse responses into a convolution plugin like our mixIR2 or hardware device that can load IRs and route your guitar signal through it. The signal can come from your amp's preamp, the line out on your amp, a guitar DI box, or a dummy load box with a line out to safely get the direct signal from the power amp. And voila, out comes the sound of your guitar played through a well-mic'ed speaker cabinet, in an acoustically treated live room, run through a Neve 1073, a preamp expensive enough that your wife will probably divorce you if you buy one yourself -- and all without disturbing the neighbors. Will it sound exactly the same as the actual setup captured by the impulse response? Not completely. It'll be missing the non-linear stuff like distortion (many would agree this is a good thing), but it's really, REALLY close.

Check out our Tutorials section for a more detail on the topic of using our IRs.

Can I use them with [ Insert amp modeler here ]?
Yes. Just bypass the cabinet simulation and put a convolution plugin with one of our IRs in the effects chain right after the amp sim plugin, or on the input track in the case of hardware modelers (see the Tutorials section for details). Some sims, like Revalver allow you to load your own IRs. Using our IRs will give you a more varied sonic pallette to choose from when dialing in your unique tone and in the case of some well-known hardware units, it will give your sound a more realistic sense of space and lots more options.

I got better tone with my PODxt but wouldn't dream of posting clips in an amp forum much less call it "my new amp".
Edit: Yes, modelers are fun and convenient for practice and yes, the VH section brings out the prick in me big time, sorry, but can you blame me?!?! :what: There is still a good amp building community here, and the 68 chassis are still in the store for those who want to come aboard! :D

Those both sound really good, the gain sounds like it is fun to play. Squishy and fuzzy in a good way... Thanks for sharing.

I was poking around on youtube and found this example of someone playing with guitar rig 5...

I'd like to know what that guy's settings were, is that just guitar rig 5 with no other tricks?

It sounds very good too, but doesn't have the hi-fi pinging sound that is in the second youtube vid posted here, which sounds otherwise great.

Man, I might go check out guitar rig, that sound is really nice - without cooking tubes, or fingers with a soldering iron.

Hey man, that clips mine too

Yeah that's just GR5 without any impulses or anything.

No need to be so hostile Strat, it's all in fun, it's not like this part of the forum is thriving with brand new stimulating information about Eddie everyday now is it? Just a little fun, and IMO.. Line 6 sounds like dog shit. And I only put new amp to try and throw some peoples guesses off a little, I wouldn't actually use this as a real amp, especially for doing brown sound.

I think it sounds pretty fricken good. Not much to deciding if the clips are real or not most of the time though.

Heres why-most modeling digital tones never display live cabinet feedback interaction as most are direct in.

I think medeling is gettin there. I figure another ten years will do it some serious justice. Never the less it is a marvelous breakthrough i think a ton of us woulda wished we had back in the 70's and 80's for jammin on and practicing. It has opened up alot for kids today and learners. However even my vox tonelab amp with a real 12ax7 still sounds and feels more real than my line 6.

DISCLAIMER: I AM IN NO WAY SAYING THIS WILL REPLACE VACUUM TUBE AMPS!

But, I am having a freaking blast playing GR5 through a good solid state power amp and reference speakers. More power just makes it more better. Let me put it this way: right now GR5 Jump Plexi with stereo delay and plate verb sounds better than my real amp setup. If you don't even count the convenience of going to my drummer's place with a tone port and a laptop instead of dragging 100lbs of amps and cabs over there, it is at least giving me some target tones that I would like to achieve with tubes when I can fund the project. It all feeds off each other.
Interpretation?! I thought I was playing it right!

Modellers for jamming or even a simple mix session will sound great, particularly for a processed Joe/Vai/etc tone

Start adding tracks to the mix and you'll vanish into the mix. A great signal from great mic "hearing" a great amp, positioned right in a great room.... no computer will touch it ever... However, Ed is one track! So it would be easy to get a decent sound so long at the track count is down and the the drums are impulses (because a great recording of a killer set, with killer mics and in a great room would shine a glaring light on the modeller being a weak imposter). Bass, DI. Keys etc... Should work, just don't add any true quality signals.

I've tried getting my Rack11 as close as possible to the reall 12000 as I can. Side by side, the depth just isn't there with the modlers. The richness of the tubes is pretty hard to emulate as well as whats coming out of a quad of good Celestions. It's cool to hear this stuff as to how close it can get, but keep in mind this is an amp building forum. Just saying. :hairband:

Note: As Strat78 said earlier of you guys should grab one of the 12000 chassis and front/back plates while George still has some. You may not be building an amp yet but down the road you'll wish you had gotten this stuff while you had the chance. The original specs 12000 chassis with original plates are impossible to find. I'm grabbing another one today for later use. Just ordered a Mojo headbox as well. Sweet.

I think we all know this is a amp building forum. However,if you can achieve this mythical brown sound in a recording fashion which listen to the clips provided clearly indicates it can be accomplished without a tube amp. It's part of sharing "hey check this out" furthermore I ask myself why even bother to reply to this post if you sincerely feel thee unworthyness of the topic? I know opinions are always welcomed hence the meaning of "forum" still come on support my friends we are all here for the same reason we admire Ed. :peace:
