OK ..... here is the best way to reach Donn Landee.

I provided the tools , but , someone else will need to mail letters, call his house or go knock on the door to see if he answers.

...but someone needs to volunteer soon cause we need answers :dlr:

 hmm, this could get really rich.

Ya know... if someone, or a group of well-known good folks, could sway Mr. Landee into a bonafide interview on this specific weighty matter... brilliant suggestion mrdirtycooter!

Who could pull it off? VHND? Mr. Friedman? Mr. Thorn? (pardon me for calling anyone one out! :worthy: )
An authorized spokesperson/roadwarrior from the EVH Forum at MetroAmp.com?

The Gretsch Pages have Proteus. He travels all over the country with his field recorders and his Mac, and covers all kinds of events for Gretsch, news, current events, historical events, etc. Which bodes well for Fender FMIC, youbetcha'.

I mean, if ever there IS a historical moment going on with Van Halen, deserving of some deep retrospective, it'd be now right?

Then there's IF Don can talk about it, or if it's cool with Ed, or what?

But if Don could be interviewed (ok, I'd settle for unofficial off-the-record! ) . . .

I dunno', I just see it going around to create a ripple effect that might influence (indirectly) a Renaissance in Ed's tone tomorrow. But I like to dream big like that . . .

I mean hell, Andy Johns and Eddie Kramer gave good stuff on all those killer sessions they did! Why can't Don? :D

And I am sure he would say

SIT DOWN WALDO! !!!!

We should just tell him were doin a documentary and that we're from EVH University. I am sure he would be more inclined to help greater education.

Well I'm lovin the spirit of this idea.

I could reach out to him, as I fancy myself a loudmouth, that would be the easy part!

But it'd stop short with my knowledge and ability to dig for the detailsz

How about someone knowledge-wise here?

Can we generate the 'list o questions'? What would they be?

Great technique thread!

Edit: Waldo from EVH University is PRICELESS!
Somebody snag EVHU domain!

Others chime in here, but for me, when I analyze the tracks, it is clear that the frequency response of the sm57 from 100Hz down and from 10K and up does not match what the frequency analysis is showing...again, I am using the Meanstreets riff as a sample because it is perfectly isolated...Furthermore, when I analyze the reverb side alone, there is a very even frequency response that a sm57 would never give you because of its low/high end drop off in frequency response...Looking at Unchained intro, there is a very strong 1K in there that pops out on the first Db sus part of the riff...this also pop's out in analysis of the corresponding reverb side of the signal

...for me, the celestion/sm57 combo MUST be augmented with something more full-range...either at the source speaker mic or at the reverb side of things, or a room mic, or something...for me this is the primary question --- what was the configuration of the full-range component of the aggregate guitar channel...Are we talking room mics, condenser on the celestions as well, jbl's???

...after that, the next questions come down to the recording chain components used -- la2a's compressors?? pultec eq's?? console eq's?? ...and finally, what were the eq settings used -- this one is pretty important, because there a number of ways to twist an eq to get certain phasing characteristics that will give dimension to the sound...

...the engineering side of these we can reverse engineer if we really have to...the big one is the configuration of the how the celestion/sm57 was enhanced with the full-range component of the sound coming off the cab...that's the black box

I wanna know what he seen in Eds rig, if he remembers, everything that was set up. Were there JBL's used? This he would have to remember cause those dust caps are fricken unforgettable.
How much if any e.q. was used at the board?
How many cabs were used?
What did franky look like when you seen it?
Do you remember what the pickup looked like in the guitar?
Was the destroyer used?
Explain the reverb and how it was applied to the tracks.
how did you get or what did you use for the predelay on the reverb.
What mics were used and about where were the placements on the cones?
Did Ed have an e.q. on his pedal board in the studio?
Was there any load boxes or slaving into other heads?
Was it truly uncorked wide open about to blow the speakers or was there a master volume?
Is the head we think was used on the first record actually the one he used?
