I always listen a lot to my Atomic Punks bootleg vinyl (the sb live bootleg of the Pasadena Dec, 20th 1977 gig), and Im always amazed on how Ed rocks in and out the P90 BUT (to my ears) at the same time he gets a little bit of more volume and a more pronounced delay effect, how he achieved that so easily?
I hear that especially on On Fire but also on Atomic Punks and Somebody Get Me A Dcotor.
Ive speculed by myself on this, hes so quick that Im pretty sure he hits nothing more than a pedal so I guessed some solutions but no one seem to hit the mark :
-) the "junk" pedalboard recycled loop pedal activate both the P90 and an EP3 but that could it mean he used 2 EP3s in serie as I hear a bit of delay also on the non-P90 parts
-) a roadie adjust the EP3 setting (but to me things are so quick he must be flash) and Eds only engages the P90
can you guys please shed some light here?
Thanks a lot
heres an example (this comes from the CD version which is way more clear, trebley and polished than my LP) :

Thats actually the 10-15-77 Pasadena civic show. Ed was using his Franky (not sure if it was before the striped paint job) and it had a hot ceramic pick up in it (Mighty Mite Screamer/Dimarzio Super Distortion clone). Imo Ed may have had the amp turned up a hair PAST its 'sweet spot' (8 can sometimes sound better than 10), BUT, possibly the 6 band was on a setting he had previously not used ?
I prefer the soundcheck of this show over the performance. Ed played his BEST 'ICE CREAM MAN' solo ever, imo, on this show.

thanks for the date correction I copied the front cover one without regarding the 6band from all the pics I saw I dont think he used the 6band together with the P90, I always see it used to voice in a particular way an amp setup (like in the Jap tour pics).
The soundcheck files are not in my vinyl but on the CD they sound more like my LP than the gig tracks which are way too polite, Ed does great things in every one of those tracks to me its an overall fantastic performance and its my benchmark, Im not taking into studio stuff... too much things goin on there
My clue is still how does he gets that jump in volume (with a more pronounced delay effect) when the P90 is engaged ?? or am I taking this wrong ?? can you please share your opinion about?

I dont know how or why there is a volume increase when the Phase 90 is engaged. Ed obviously was using a script model Phase 90 so those do not boost volume (though the block logo ones do). It could be simply how his pedals didnt have true bypass switches and, depending on where they were in the chain. Possibly, when the Phase 90, when turned off, it caused the signal to 'sag' a touch, volume-wise. Not sure. The 'Aint Talkin' Bout Love' soundcheck for this show (Dave talking about '"Shine the echo there, get those cords that we use", etc) is one of the best LIVE (well soundcheck) performances I've heard Van Halen do. Even Dave was TRYING to sing properly.

No doubt, the Voodoo Queen sound check is THE tone for my search. That and the tone from the 1978 tour, ATBL,etc from Fresno show...thick, bright, and crisp!Tone Slinger wrote:I dont know how or why there is a volume increase when the Phase 90 is engaged.
