Largo is the best (full) video available. I think Oakland (Fair Warning) is probably better and more pro but we only have the 3 vidz from that one...

Eddie maybe wasn't pure "magic" that night in Largo, but he was damn good....the South American videos from early 83 - to my mind - he seems a little tired. And Us Fest is just plain drunk and under - rehearsed.

List of "Facts" We Don't Really Know:

"I can tell EVH used his magic plexi on Stay Frosty, because I think my ears can tell it's so..."
"I can tell EVH used a distortion pedal/cascaded gain mod because I can hear it's so..."
"I can tell which pickup(s) EVH used on which albums because..."
"We've proven that EVH's pedals are stock because he sometimes lied & our ears+consensus is better than his statements..."

Theories my friends. Good theories maybe, but speculation nonetheless...

Yeah, chrisom, but if we abide by your ideas --- why would there be a forum? LOL

I sign up to the idea that MOST of Ed is stock stuff. In any model, though, his STOCK stuff is readily disappearing as it was built in the 70s and is of limited quanitity.

I think the guys here are gettin' damn close. But no one can reproduce Sunset Sound and Donn Landee in late 77. I think that's where we are all chasing our tail.

VH1 thru Fair Warning sounds KILLER. Diver Down and 1984? Didn't like at the time, but love them now. 5150 and "For Unlawful"? I gotta admit, as much as I thought I hated the Sammy years when they happening, the guitar sound on those (2) concert films they did sounds incredible. Even in the full "Balance" concert on Youtube and the Gary Cherone live shows the guitar sound is great. So I don't know. I think with any good "old" Marshall sound as your base tone, and running your delay/modulation effects Wet/Dry/Wet after the amp, you could cop a decent EVH tone, especially if you're tuned down 1/2 a step and have a nice pickup. But you could hear in that Steven Rosen interview recently posted here that most of Eddie's sound is in his hands anyway. My point is- Don't say you know exactly what it is when you don't really know. It's not important to know exactly what they're doing, even though it's nice when you do. Once you think you got it, they change their setup anyway. Find your best approximation you can live with and go for it. The guys on here that are close- that's what they're doing; They're not saying they know something they don't really know- They're puttin' out music... PEACE :peace: :vh:

There's actually (4) tunes from that Oakland concert that I've seen-"Hear About It Later", "Sinner's Swing", "Unchained" and "So This Is Love"; I used to have a video of all (4) running consecutively from some guy overseas who would sell you blank VHS tapes with your pick of footages from his vast BL catalog by adding the minutes 'till your tape was full (at no charge of course), but like a dope I stored it in the moist basement ruining the tape :( :bang: :vh:

Never heard of "Sinner's Swing" from Oakland. There is the L.A. and Chicago 8mm stuff, but it would be a huge shock to find that there was ever a video of "Sinner's Swing" from Oakland pro-shot.

Well I have to say that you are right. I don't know what Ed had or didn't have in his pedals. But I do think that we can trust our ears and consensus of opinions more than we can trust Ed's own words when it comes to amps and pedals. He has been pretty forthcoming about the guitars and there is alot of photographoc evidence that can be used to track down the guitars. But you are right, when it comes to amps and pedals and a pickup's inner workings, there is no way to tell.

I still believe that the consensus is that Ed's Phase 90 and Flanger were stock...based on our ears and consensus of those who have used or are using the original stock pedals.

If that's the case you would be the only fan to ever see and possess pro shot fottage of Sinners Swing Oakland '81.If it exists it's never seen the light of day.
